CALLICOON — April 18, 2008 — The Sullivan County District Attorney's Office in conjunction with the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office and the New York State Police have been continuing their investigation into the death of Lori A. Schubeler which occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 13, 2008 at the Western Hotel in Callicoon.
Autopsy results have revealed that Schubeler died as a result of a single gun shot wound to the left chest with the bullet entering her aorta and lung. It was a .25 caliber gun that fired the round.
Investigation has also established that the handgun belonged to Joseph Naughton, 64, and the owner of the Western Hotel.
Additionally, at the time the semi-automatic weapon was discharged, the weapon was being handled by Naughton. The weapon and other forensic evidence is currently being examined by the New York State Police laboratory in Albany.
The next investigative step will be to have this matter presented to a Sullivan County Grand Jury for their consideration. It is anticipated that the Grand Jury will hear this case on or about April 30, 2008.
The Grand Jury will hear the evidence surrounding the shooting and will have to determine whether or not the shooting was a result of either reckless conduct, criminal negligence or accidental.
