Schmidt Declared Winner in Liberty
By Sharon Space-Bamberger
LIBERTY November 20, 2007 The Saturday morning regulars in Lisa’s Luncheonette in Liberty gave John Schmidt, owner of Electro Electric, a round of applause when he came for breakfast.
On Friday, Schmidt ousted incumbent Frank DeMayo as Liberty Supervisor by seven votes.
Schmidt admitted he was “downcast” when earlier reports named DeMayo as the winner, due to erroneous reporting by a poll worker.
When the error was discovered, the Board of Elections gave Schmidt an additional 80 votes and a lead of sixteen. When the absentee and affidavit ballots were counted, Schmidt had won, with a tally of 947 votes to De Mayo’s 940 votes.
The supervisor-elect said, “If you want real stress you should be down at the Board of Elections when they’re counting.”
Schmidt added, “I want to thank the voters in the town of Liberty for voting for me. They’re the ones who decided.”
Schmidt noted his first order of business as Liberty Supervisor will be “To look over the existing problems in Liberty and to update the zoning rules and regulations.”
