Elizabeth M. Miller
Retired Beautician, 87

Elizabeth M. “Betty” Miller of Horseheads passed away at home on February 23, 2010. She was 87.
Betty was born December 10, 1922 in White Sulphur Springs, the daughter of Fred M. and Nellie (Wagner) Dowitsch.
She attended a one-room schoolhouse in North Branch, NY. She graduated from Delaware Valley Central School in 1940 and the Southern Tier Beauty Academy in Binghamton, NY in 1942. After graduation she operated her own beauty salon, Betty’s Beauty Box in North Branch. She married Warren K. Miller on September 1, 1943. Betty spent the early part of her married life as a homemaker raising three children. Later on she worked as the tax collector for the Delaware Valley School district and as a secretary for the Burkle Insurance Agency in Callicoon, NY. As an Air Force wife she lived in Alamogordo, NM; Clovis, NM; and Waco, TX; but finally settled in Hortonville, NY near her childhood home. In addition to teaching her children how to swim, she was an embroiderer and a bowler. She bowled in the Hortonville Ladies League from 1976-1984. She was an accomplished piano and organ player. In later years, Betty enjoyed watching hummingbirds at her home and spending time on her computer keeping in contact with family and friends. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Jeffersonville, NY, a communicant of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Horseheads, NY and a member of the Hudson Valley Chapter Ex-POW organization at West Point, NY.
She is survived by her husband, Warren, of  66 years, her three children, Creighton (Cecelia) Miller of Burdett, NY; Glenn (Marcelle) Miller of Walton, NY; and Judy Miller-Lyons of Highland Mills, NY and (Marc Lyons) of Monticello, NY. Also, three grandchildren, Heather (Dan) Kennedy of Searsmont, ME; Brian (Stephanie) Miller of Bath, NY; and Hilary Miller of Melbourne, Australia; two great grandchildren; Caleb and Ella; a brother, Robert (Jean) Dowitsch of Gilboa, NY; and a nephew, Donald Dowitsch of Canandaigua, NY.  At her request, all services will be held privately. Interment will be held in Hortonville Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Julia Ognan
Retired Mail Carrier, 90

Julia Ognan, 90, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of New Milford, Conn., died Sunday, February 21, 2010, at Banner Baywood Hospital, Mesa, Ariz. She was the wife of the late John J. Ognan.
Mrs. Ognan was born in Providence, Rhode Island, January 26, 1920, daughter of the late Peter and Agatha Tamulewicz Lagonowicz.
She was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years, retiring in 1986. She moved to Mesa, Arizona in 1992.
Mrs. Ognan is survived by a son, Peter P. Ognan of Newtown, Conn.; a daughter, Christine Hill of Woodbourne; two brothers, Walter Lagonowicz of Miami, Fla.; and Brother Peter Lagonowicz of Lincroft, N.J.; a sister, Jennie Slowick of Mesa, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on Tuesday, March 2, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford, Conn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, New Milford, Conn. Burial will take place in the spring in St. Francis Cemetery, New Milford.

Hannah D. Hahl
Retired Postal Clerk, 93

Hannah D. Hahl of North Branch, a retired postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service and an area resident since 1956, died Sunday, February 21, 2010, at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 93.
The daughter of Norman and Eva Justice Dunk, she was born January 25, 1917 in Pedricktown, NJ. She was widow of the late Charles Emerson Hahl.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Barbara Hahl of Buck Brook; her grandchildren, Michael and Beth Hahl and Charles and Lynne Hahl, all of Buck Brook; Audra and Mark Hubert of Fremont Center; and Katie and Joe Herbert of Jeffersonville; and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Charles Hahl, she was predeceased by a daughter, Eva Mae Hahl.
There will be no calling hours.
Services will be private.
