Evelyn May Cogswell, a longtime Liberty resident, passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 93.
The daughter of the late Charles and Tovola Lang, she was born July 26, 1916 in New York City.
An avid bingo player and fisherman, she had a love for flowers and plants. She had a green thumb and could make anything grow.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Collins and her husband Jim of Jeffersonville; her two sons, William “Bill” Cogswell and his wife Jacqueline of Liberty and Kenneth Cogswell, also of Liberty; her sister, Muriel Burkhammer of West Virginia; seven grandchildren, Billy, Bobby, Lee J., Cory, Beth, Chris and Jim; and eight great-grandchildren, Ashlee, Zach, Travis, Ethan, Alexandra, Mike, Kristin and Justice. She was predeceased by her husband, William Lee Cogswell, and her sister, Dorothy.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 19 at Ramsay’s Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St. Liberty, with George Dexheimer officiating.
Cremation was made at Cedar Hill Crematory, Middle Hope, NY.

Joan Marilyn Purcell

Joan Marilyn Purcell, age 80, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 16, 2010 at the Eddy Ford Nursing Home in Cohoes, NY where she received wonderful care at one of their new Green House homes.
Joan was born in Brooklyn on 3/23/1930, the only surviving child of Harry A. Kerbs and Emily E. (Ackerman) Kerbs. As a young girl she worked in the family boarding house “River View” along the banks of the picturesque Upper Delaware River above Narrowsburg, NY, counting among her early companions in that bucolic setting a brace of workhorses named Whisky and Sour and a succession of Scottie dogs. “Kerby” had warm brown eyes and a pleasant manner. She graduated from Forest Hills NY High School in the class of 1948 and from Centenary College of New Jersey in 1950. Enduring the courtship period pranks of his three brothers, she married Robert Purcell of Narrowsburg, and they made happy homes in New York City, Pearl River in Rockland County, Janesville in Schoharie County, South Venice in Florida, and finally back to Narrowsburg. Joan was a secretary in the heart of 1950s Manhattan and among subsequent jobs she was an executive assistant for the Automobile Almanac. Later in life she ran a successful weekend barn sale and exhibited at various antiques fairs and centers, where her specialty was vintage clothing, linens, quilts, Deco-era, and anything old and unusual that her customers would marvel (and then haggle) over.
Mom enjoyed raising her family, doing things with her dear friends, volunteer and educational activities, cooking, canning the produce from Dad’s extensive gardens, perusing the local newspapers in the morning and curling up with her magazines and cheese crackers in the evening, yard saling, beachcombing, following professional ice skating, world travel, and showing her grandkids a good time and a good example. She was tireless, patient, positive, sharp as a tack, brave in the face of adversity, always there for those who needed her, and unassuming, though she could crack a good quip and really had a way with words. We will miss you Mom more than words can say.
Joan is predeceased by her loving husband Robert J. Purcell; and is survived by her children Shawn Purcell (Mary Kim) of Delmar, NY; Brian Purcell of Narrowsburg, NY; and Grace Purcell of Delmar, NY; and her grandchildren Keelin, Braedan, Aliza, and Lauren.
Relatives and friends may call Wednesday, April 21 from noon until 1 p.m. at Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg, NY. Following a brief service, interment will be at St. Francis Cemetery in the same town.

Gertrude C. Meyer

Gertrude Caroline Meyer, born July 14, 1909 in Fremont Center, NY, died Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at her home in New York City.
She was the daughter of Daniel and Christina Hoistman Meyer and sister of the late Albert, Charles and Barbara Meyer Degenhardt.
Gertrude worked for 49 years as a hairdressers’ assistant in Englewood, NJ. After her retirement at 74 years of age, she gave her time to volunteering at the Nursing Home, Soup Kitchen, Senior Citizens’ luncheons and Tenants Patrol, for which she received several awards.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews, greatnieces and greatnephews, all of whom adored their Aunt Gert.
Mallie Bedik
June 5, 1922 - April 5, 2010
A long time Mountaindale resident, Mallie Bedik of West Palm Beach, Fla. died on Monday, April 5, 2010, at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, NY. She was 87.
Mallie was born in New York, NY, on June 5, 1922, the daughter of Morris and Bessie Troy.
She is survived by her two daughters, Abby Chudy and her husband, Larry, of Henderson, NV, and Raynee Blum and her husband, Alan, of Woodmere, NY; her two sons, Lloyd Bedik and his wife, Esther, of Bolton, CT, and Scot Bedik and his wife, Robin, of Mountaindale, NY; her sister Edith Bergman of Lake Worth, FL; her grandchildren, Alit, Aaron, and Troy Bedik, Mark and Adam Silverbush, Michael and Benjamin Blum, and Stephen and Greg Bedik; seven great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law Daniel Bedik and his wife, Marilyn; her sister-in-law Florence Rosen; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George.
Mallie was a wonderful person who always put others before herself and devoted her life to her children. She will be dearly missed.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 7 at the Mountaindale Synagogue, Mountaindale, NY. Burial will be held at the Mountaindale Cemetery, Marsh Road, Glen Wild, NY.

Dennis William Ferrick, 54, passed away on April 9, 2010. Born in New York City, he resided in Bradenton, Fla. since 1982.
He spent his youth in Tyler Hill and graduated Damascus High School in 1973. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette, and daughters, Harmony, Autumn, and Jennifer. He is too-soon departed from sister and brother-in-law, Mara and Randall Rainwater, and nephew Elijah. Survivors also include siblings Geraldine, Peggy, and Martin, and mother and father-in-law, Skip and Noreen Mudge. Dennis passed at home surrounded by family and friends. He loved life and touched the lives of everyone around him. He cherished family with his whole being and has left us before we were ready to lose him. A celebration of Dennis’ life will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made to Tidewell Hospice of Bradenton. Forever in our hearts....
