John L. Knise

John L. Knise, 86, of Long Eddy, NY, formerly of Stony Point, NY, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Castle Point Veterans Hospital, Castle Point, NY.
The son of the late William and Johanna Behrman Knise, he was born July 16, 1922 in North Branch, NY.
He formerly worked on the Fleet Reserve in Stony Point and was a retired laborer for Local 17 and Local 754 of the Laborers Union. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and was a member of the Allan Milk Memorial Post #7276 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Long Eddy, NY.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Castle Point Veterans Hospital in the Heroes Harbor Wing.
Survivors include one son, Michael C. Knise and his wife Deborah of Clifton Park, NY; two granddaughters, Shannon Sykela and Amber Knise; two great-granddaughters, Kayla Krakat and Kasey Sykela; one sister, Barbara Mead and her husband Ed of Avalon, NJ; and several nieces and nephews, including Ricky and Evelyn Ruppert of Kenoza Lake, NY.
He was predeceased by a son, John L. Knise; two brothers, Frederick “Sonny” Knise and Franklin Knise; and two sisters, Clara Ruppert and Gertrude Ebert.
Visitation was held Tuesday, March 10 at Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, 34 Upper Main St., Callicoon, NY. A VFW service was held Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Graveside services were held Wednesday, March 11, at Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery, Liberty, NY.
Burial was made in Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery, Infirmary Road, Liberty, NY.

David B. Jaffe

David B. Jaffe, Sullivan County native and long time resident, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at his home in Liberty, NY. He was 67.
The son of the late Max Jaffe and Muriel Dichter Jaffe, David was born in Liberty on March 24, 1941.
He was a well-known Certified Public Accountant, having practiced in the area for more than three decades. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, David was an alumnus of Hofstra University, a dedicated member of Congregation Ahavath Israel, Liberty, an associate of Hadassah, and a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.
The greatest joy in his life was his family, children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed. David is survived by his loving wife Ellen Mandel Jaffe, at home; son, Michael Jaffe, and his wife Stephanie, of Cincinnati, OH; daughters, Elise Jaffe and her husband Daniel Sangeap of Forest Hills, NY, and Rachel Mauceri and her husband Patrick of Ardmore, Pa; brother, Joseph Jaffe and his wife Nancy of Weston, CT; four grandchildren, Abraham, Kevin, Max, and Lia, and his nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday morning, March 12, at Congregation Ahavath Israel, 39 Chestnut Street, Liberty. Burial was made in the Synagogue Cemetery, Hysanah Road, Liberty.

Carol Ann Heller
Nurse, 67

Carol Ann Heller of Mooresville, North Carolina, formerly of Callicoon and Tyler Hill, passed away from cancer at age 67 on March 9, 2009. She was at home surrounded by family and supported by friends and her colleagues of Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County.
She was born November 2, 1941 in Romford, Essex, England, the daughter of Leslie Martin and Hazel Newman Martin. She moved with her family to Verona, New Jersey in 1959.
She always wanted to be a nurse, and she graduated from Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing in Montclair, New Jersey in 1964. She considered nursing her calling, and she touched innumerable lives with her compassion, wisdom, and skill in her 44 year career. She worked for a time at Community General Hospital in both Callicoon and Harris and Wayne Home Health. An early proponent of the hospice movement, Carol was instrumental in bringing hospice to Sullivan County, New York. She was on their first board of directors and later worked in Nantucket, Mass., Wayne County, Pa., and Iredell County, NC, as a hospice nurse and volunteer.
Carol loved home and family. Her children and grandchildren brought her much joy, and she had a special place in her heart for her pets. While living in Callicoon, she was also president of the Delaware Youth Center Board and a member of the Upper Delaware Ambulance Corps.
She is predeceased by her parents and her brother, Frank Wayne Martin. Survivors include daughter Kim Eschenberg and her husband Dennis of Callicoon, New York; son Lloyd Heller, Jr., his wife Helen, and their children Cassie, Justin, and Chloe of Portland, Oregon; son Daniel Heller, his wife Yong Ok, and their children Serina and Daniel, Jr. of Mooresville, North Carolina; nephew Geoffrey Martin, his wife Nancy, and their children Abigail and Sophia of Keene, New Hampshire; cousins in both Great Britain and the United States; and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, North Carolina on Friday, March 13, 2009, at 11:30am, with a private interment at a later date. Funeral arrangements are by Cavin-Cook Funeral Home of Mooresville.

Max Frouman, 83

Max Frouman, 83, of Tampa, Fla. died Monday, January 26, 2009. He moved to Tampa in 1971 from Woodridge, NY, where he was the office manager/accountant at Inter-County Farmers Cooperative Association. He retired after 20 years with the Florida Public Service Commission, where he was a utility analyst/auditor. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, and served as commander of the Albert Aronovitz Post 373 of the Jewish War Veterans in Tampa. He was also member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Rita. Survivors include his son, Dr. Cary Frouman, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services with military honors were held January 27 at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.

Abrossium Cherepanov
Greensboro, N.C., 85

Abe Cherepanov of Greensboro, NC, formerly of Sutton, Alaska, and Parksville, NY, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Beacon Place Hospice in Greensboro.
Born Oct. 8, 1924 in Russia, his family immigrated to China where he grew up and served in the Chinese Nationalist Army until he immigrated with others to the U.S. with the help of the Tolstoy Foundation in Valley Cottage, NY, in 1948.
He was a union mason and bricklayer, also a farmer, and an excellent horseman.
He retired in Sutton, Alaska, where he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and a small farm for 27 years until he relocated to Greensboro, NC.
He is survived by his children, Anna Maxey of Greensboro, NC; Katerina Cronk of Liberty, NY; Sophia Pressman of St Louis, MO; Peter Cherepanov of Knoxville, TN; Tim Cherepanov of Neversink, NY; and Steven Cherepanov and Andrew Cherepanov of Liberty, NY. He is also survived by many grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday March 13 at the Holy Cross Orthodox Church, 645 Greensboro Rd., High Point, NC.
Graveside services will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery, 4426 Central Ave., Charlotte, NC.

Joseph M. Chaboty
Ret. car salesman, 79

Joseph M. Chaboty, a retired car salesman for New Rochelle Ford, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009. He was 79. The son of the late Jules and Freida Chaboty, he was born in the Bronx on October 24, 1929.
Joe is a former resident of Loch Sheldrake and worked on the construction of the Neversink Dam until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951, where he saw combat in Korea.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Dorothy Chaboty of Manhattan; his son Eric Chaboty, wife Tammi Chaboty, and granddaughter Savannah Chaboty of Neversink, NY.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 16 at 11:45 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, 264 North Main Street, Liberty.
Burial will follow at the St. Peter’s Cemetery in Liberty.
