Katherine S. Houston
Schoolteacher, 85
Katherine S. Houston of Middletown, formerly of Wurtsboro, a retired schoolteacher, died September 15, 2008, at Orange Regional Medical Center. She was 85.
Born on June 13, 1923, she was the daughter of Adam Startup and Emily Bornemann Startup. She married Russell E. Houston on October 3, 1948.
Katherine attended Monticello High School and graduated from State Teachers College at New Paltz (now known as SUNY New Paltz) in 1943. Her teaching career spanned 41 years, in Long Island, Ellenville, Monticello and Wurtsboro, having taken only a short break to raise her family. In 1984, she retired from Wurtsboro Elementary School, which she considered her most loved time of teaching. She touched many lives and fondly remembered so many of her former students and wonderful colleagues.
She was a life-long member of the Community Church of Wurtsboro. Katherine was also a longtime member and former President and Secretary of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 1266, Wurtsboro, New York.
Katherine is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline A. Marchant and husband, Lewis of Middletown and Wendy Houston-Anderson and husband, Jon of Northfield, Vermont. She will be sorely missed by two beloved grandchildren, Emily L. McElroy of Middletown and Zachary A. Cohen of Northfield, Vermont.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of sixty years, Russell; her daughter, Gail Marie Houston; and brother, Charles Startup.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to all of the nurses, technicians, doctors and employees of Orange Regional Medical Center in the Tucker Center, CCU, PCU and Tower 4, whose loving care and compassion for Mom is so deeply appreciated.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 111 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro.
Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 20 at 11 a.m. at the Community Church of Wurtsboro, Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro with the Rev. Robert Meyer officiating.
Burial will follow at the Sylvan Cemetery in Wurtsboro.

Josef Richter
Physician, 68
Josef Richter of Monticello lost a valiant battle with myelodysplastic syndrome on September 13, 2008. He was 68.
The son of Sarah Brown and Hyman Richter, he was born in the Bronx on November 11, 1939 and grew up in Forest Hills.
A graduate of Hobart College and the Catholic University of Louvain Belgium Medical School, he trained at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and in Buffalo. After practicing in Oberlin, Ohio, he moved to Sullivan County and practiced Urology at Catskill Regional Medical Center from 1977 until his retirement in July 2007. He was a Board Member at Temple Sholom, an officer of the Medical Staff at CRMC, a member of Sullivan County Medical Society and a member of the Monticello Rotary. He was a former member of the Air Force Reserves at Rome Air Force Base.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Ida; his children, Dr. Amy Richter and her husband, Dr. Norman Pflaster; his son, Joshua Richter and his wife, Rachel Levin; also his grandchildren, Jonah Harrison and Hannah Colette Pflaster. He was looking forward to his son’s expected child in October. He is also survived by his sister, Rochelle Ellen Richter of Florida.
The family is sitting shiva at their home in Monticello until Friday.

Sheldon L. Hadden
Ret. Civil Engineer, 83
Sheldon L. Hadden of Liberty, a retired civil engineer and a long time area resident died Monday, September 15, 2008 in Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris. He was 83.
The son of the late Sheldon L. and Florence Jensen Hadden, he was born January 6, 1925 in Liberty.
Sheldon served our country in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operations with the 24th Infantry and he was awarded the Bronze Star for participating in the New Guinea Campaign. He was a graduate of Liberty High School, Syracuse University, and had been employed by the DEP of New York City. He was a member and former officer of the Roscoe NY O&W Railway Museum, a member of the Lake Muskoday Homeowners Assoc., a former member of the Twin Village Gold Club; and he was an avid NY Yankee fan.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Anderson Hadden, at home; two sons, Clark A. Hadden and his wife, Nancy of Livingston Manor and Stephen L. Hadden of Woodbourne; his daughter, Susan L. Hadden of Livingston Manor; his sister, Vida Berry of Lake Katrine; two grandchildren, Jon P. Hadden and Vanessa E. Hadden; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Jerry Hadden.
Funeral services will be today, September 19 at 11 a.m. at the Harris Funeral Home, West Street at Buckley, Liberty. The Rev. Jearl Wallace will officiate.
Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery, Liberty.

Jean B. Rosenheck
Jean B. Rosenheck of Glen Wild died Monday, September 15, 2008 in Middletown. She was 78.
The daughter of the late Abe and Sarah Haber Birnbaum, she was born August 15, 1930 in Monticello.
The youngest of four children, she was raised in the family’s grocery store in Kauneonga Lake, and graduated early from Monticello High School in 1946. Jean followed her siblings in graduating from Syracuse University, earning her Bachelor’s degree in both Psychology and Sociology. She was an active member of the Sullivan County community her entire life. She served many years on the Monticello School Board, where she was also its president. Jean was a member and president of the Sullivan County School Boards Association. She was a past member of the Temple Sholom board of directors, a member of the Catskill Mountain chapter of the Business and Professional Women’s Association and a past BPW “Woman of the Year.” She was vice-president of the Rock Hill Development Corporation and created and operated Princess Advertising Specialties, a multi-award winning advertising company that lead the way in promoting Sullivan County businesses for 47 years. She was an avid bowler and spent many years as an active member of the Ladies Bowling Association in Kiamesha.
Mrs. Rosenheck is survived by her husband of 53 years, Seymour; her daughter, Sari; her grandson, Alec; and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Daniel Birnbaum and Morris Birnbaum, and one sister, Mary B. Zimmerman.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 17 at Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, Monticello. Rabbi Marvin Goldman officiated. Burial was made in Temple Beth-El Cemetery, Route 17B, Bethel.
The family will be sitting Shiva at Seymour Rosenheck’s house in Glen Wild on Thursday and Friday from 4-7 p.m., and at Sari Rosenheck’s house in Rock Hill on Sunday from 1-5 p.m.

Alberta Green
Cochecton Native, 79
Alberta Green of St. David, Arizona passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at the home of Emalene and Mark Brown in St. David.
Formerly of Cochecton, Alberta attended Narrowsburg Central School and graduated in the Class of 1947.
Born on August 25, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Alberta VanWagner Tyler.
The widow of Raymond Green, she is survived by several cousins, including Martha Fogg of Wyoming; Florence Tyler of New York; Gordon Tyler of Florida; Gene and Fran Fuller of New York; and Pete and Carol Furman of New York.
Also, a stepdaughter, Mary Anne Kinne of Arizona and her caregivers, Emalene and Mark Brown of Arizona.
There will be no visitation.
Graveside services will be held at Overlook Cemetery, Damascus, Pa. on Tuesday, September 23 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Stuart Hunt officiating.
Burial will be in Overlook Cemetery in Damascus, Pa.
