Jared David Carlew, 21

Jared David Carlew of Monticello, NY, passed away peacefully at home with friends, family and the staff of Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties at his side, after a long and courageous fight with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma on November 23, 2008. He was 21 years old.
Jared was born August 9, 1987 in Hollywood, Fla., the beloved son of Gregory and Barbara Klimchok Carlew. He was a 2005 graduate of Sullivan West High School.
Survivors include his parents, Gregory and Barbara Carlew, at home; his beloved sister, Jennifer and her husband, Steven Dailey of Woodbourne, NY; two loving nephews, John and Brandon Dailey; several aunts and uncles: Linda Schaefer of Lake Huntington, Donna DuBois of Cochecton, Sandy Daub of Cochecton, Brenda Manzi of Cochecton, Terri Minuck of Ellenville, Debbie Carlew of North Carolina, Brian DuBois Jr. of Jeffersonville, Bradley DuBois of Cochecton and Bruce DuBois of Cochecton; his Papa and Nana, Brian DuBois Sr. and Marti Bogdanowitz of Cochecton; a unique great-aunt, Merle Baugher, and several cousins. He also leaves behind a very special friend, Sonny Patel, whose friendship, love and support will never be forgotten.
He was predeceased by his grandfathers, Joseph Klimchok and Robert Carlew, and his grandmothers, Dorothy DuBois and Patricia Burger.
A family statement reads: “Jared was loved by whomever he touched. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.”
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, at Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Jeffersonville, NY (845-482-4280).
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 26, at St. Peter’s Church in Monticello, NY, with Fr. John Tran officiating.
Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Monticello, NY.

Wallace M. Berkowitz
CPA and Insurance exec., 76

Wallace Martin Berkowitz, a CPA and insurance executive and longtime resident of Monticello, died Sunday, November 23, 2008 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 76.
The son of the late Phillip Berkowitz and Gertrude Beitch Berkowitz, he was born January 14, 1932 in the Bronx. He was the widower of Naomi Berkowitz who predeceased him on May 1, 1987.
Wallace was president of Associated Mutual Insurance Company from 1980 to 1994. He was a board member from 1978 and was elected Chairman in 1999. He remained on as a board member until the time of his death. He also served as a board member and held the position of Treasurer of the Cooperative Federal Credit Union from 1980 until the time of his death. He joined the board of New Hope Community in 1989 and served as its Chairman from 1994 to 2004 and as its Assistant Secretary from 2005 to 2008. He remained a board member until the time of his death.
He is survived by three daughters, Amy Katz of Newbury, Ohio, Wendy Marcus and her husband Stanley of Wappingers Falls, and Dale Beliawsky and her husband Philip of Liberty; six grandchildren: Joshua Daniel, Matthew, Rebecca, Benjamin and Rachel; a brother, Kenneth Berkowitz and his wife Susan of the state of Florida; his longtime companion, Audrey Altman; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 25 at 11 a.m. at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway in Monticello. Burial will follow in the Temple Sholom Cemetery in Monticello.

Earl Lee Ponton
Ret. Refrigerator Mechanic, 84

Earl Lee Ponton of Monticello, a retired refrigerator mechanic for S & W Ice Cream Co., died Friday, November 14, 2008 at the Northern Manor Nursing Home in Nanuet. He was 84.
The son of the late Sale Ponton and Beatrice Brill Ponton, he was born October 16, 1924 in Strasberg, VA.
A World War II veteran serving in the United States Navy, Earl was also a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Monticello, the Monticello Fire Dept., the BPOE Elks Lodge #1544, Monticello and the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop.
He is survived by his wife: Barbara Anne Walker Ponton, at home; a son: William Lee Ponton & his wife Linda of Apopka, FL; a sister: Evelyn Coulson & her husband Lee of Baltimore, MD; and several nieces & nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers: Alfred, Dick & Ivan; and a sister: Oneida.
Visitation was held on Monday, November 24 at the VanInwegen-Kenny, Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello.
His funeral service was held on Monday, November 24 at the funeral home with Mo. Ninon Hutchinson officiating. Burial was made at the convenience of the family in the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello.
