William Gustav Carlson
October 23, 1924 - April 2, 2011
On Saturday April 2, 2011, William “Bill” Carlson passed away with his family at his side in Palm Coast, Florida. He was 86.
He was born in Kingston, NY on October 23, 1924.
He graduated High School from the Hurleyville School. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Radioman Second Class USNR from 1943 to 1945. During World War II he was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii,, on the USS LSM 312. After returning from the war, he worked in Peck’s Market in Hurleyville while he attended school to become a licensed meat cutter. He worked as a truck driver for Schmidt’s Wholesale and then retired. He then returned to work at Tarry Brae Golf Course as a groundskeeper and retired in 2010 after 20 years.
He was a member of the Hurleyville Fire Dept. for 65 years, serving as its Past President and Chief. He was Hurleyville Fire District Commissioner, Past President of the Sullivan County Volunteer Fireman’s Assn. (SCVFA), and a member of the Sullivan County Fire Police. He was also a member of the Hudson Valley Volunteer Fireman’s Assn (HVVFA); the Royal Order of the Blue Vests; and American Legion Post # 0109. He was a former member of the Liberty Elks #1545, and a member of the Hurleyville United Methodist Church.
Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen Jacobson Carlson, at home; son, Mark William Carlson and daughter-in-law Lorayne of Oxford, NY; daughter, Toni McKay and son-in-law Robert E. Sr. of Jeffersonville; daughter, Teri DiMarsico and son-in-law Tom of Palm Coast, Fla.; grandchildren, Christopher William Carlson and his partner Michael Nebiker of Cumming, Ga., Erica Payne and her husband Charlie of Hurleyville, and Mariann Bury and her husband Darren of Cochecton; and a large extended family including step-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, George Arthur Carlson; his mother, Jenny Carlson; and sister Mary Carlson Tremper.
Visitation will be held at the Hurleyville Fire House on Friday April 8 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. with Firematic services being held at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be at the Hurleyville Fire House on Saturday, April 9 at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at the Hurleyville Cemetery.
The Carlson family would like to invite everyone back to the Fire House after the services.
