Agnes C. ‘Chickie’ Haley
Retired Executive Assistant, 93

Agnes C. Haley, a longtime resident of Wurtsboro Hills, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at The Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty, with her family by her side. She was 93.
Agnes, or Chickie, as she was lovingly called by her family, was born in New York City on October 22, 1919. She was the daughter of Frederick Rueger and Mary Cahill Rueger. She was the widow of Jack Haley Sr. who predeceased her on February 11, 2010. They were married for 67 years.
Agnes and her family grew up in New York City and New Jersey. They summered in the family home in Wurtsboro Hills. The best times of Agnes’s life were spent at the local tavern Curcio’s where she went with her parents, family and friends and danced the night away. Agnes met the love of her life, Jack there, and they married in NYC on November 8,1942. They continued to spend summers in WH until their retirement. Agnes retired from McGraw Hill Publishing Co. in NYC as an executive assistant. Among the various projects she was involved with include: the Catholic Encyclopedia and The M H Encyclopedia of Word Art.
Once Agnes and Jack retired to Wurtsboro they became involved in various local organizations. Agnes was a past member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians; she was the secretary for the Westbrookville Seniors Club and later a member of the Bloomingburg Seniors Club. Jack & Agnes were also involved in many activities with their parish St Joseph Church in Wurtsboro. Agnes had a wonderful flair for life. She always dressed beautifully. She enjoyed decorating her lovely homes and she was an excellent cook. She loved reading, dancing and shopping but most importantly she loved her family and we in turn adored her.
Agnes is survived by her son Jack Jr. and his wife Toni of Wurtsboro, many nieces and nephews including: Carol Bonney, Rose Friedel, Joan Keating and Bobbe Kochinski, many loving friends including her best friend since childhood, Helen Curcio Zeh. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, an infant daughter Kathleen, and her brother and sisters Freddie, Bertie & Margie.
A family statement reads, “We would like to thank the staff of unit three at the SCACC. They treated our Mother like she was a member of their own family. We are humbled by their loving care, and the attention shown to Agnes and to us her family. We will be eternally grateful to them for all they have done for us. We would also like to thank the volunteers and staff of Hospice of Orange & Sullivan County. Their wise council and caring concern have helped us immeasurably in the past month.”
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 15 at St Joseph’s Church, 180 Sullivan Street in Wurtsboro with Fr. Peter Madori officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at St Joseph’s Cemetery in Wurtsboro.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Sullivan & Orange County, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
