Alton was born on June 30, 1926 in Abrahamsville, Pa., to Melvin and Annabelle Shepstone Quinn.
Alton served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1948 in the 3rd Army Division, with the rank of corporal, as a diesel mechanic. In 1949 he married Dolores K. Livers. They were together for 59 years until her passing in 2008 in Ocala, Fla., where they had resided for many years.
Alton graduated with his bachelor’s degree in organic chemistry from the University of Louisville in Kentucky where he and Dolores and daughters, Marlene and Denise, resided while Alton worked for Brown and Williamson’s Tobacco Company as a tobacco chemist. In 1964 the Quinn family moved to Cranford, N.J., when Alton was offered a job with International Flavors & Fragrances in NYC as head of the tobacco lab where he developed patents for various flavors of tobacco products.
In 1972, Alton decided to leave his present job to return with his wife and daughter Denise to Abrahamsville, Pa. where he founded and ran River Hill Sawmill until 1981 when he was offered a position as head of the laboratory for Bentoul in Malang, Indonesia. He and Dolores moved to Indonesia where they lived for several years before retiring to Florida.
Alton was an accomplished woodworker and specialized in mixing exotic woods to get various effects. He also became a spinner of wool and a handweaver, as was his wife Dolores.
Alton returned to Pa. in 2009 where he became a resident in Bethany Village, near his daughter Denise and family.
Alton is survived by his daughter Marlene Meloney and husband Dave of Bonita Springs, Fla., daughter Denise Wood and husband Harold; grandchildren, Keith Wood and wife Christina and girls Olivia and Abigail of Abrahamsville, Pa., granddaughter Emily Wood, also of Abrahamsville, Pa., grandson Dean Meloney and wife Cori and son Quinlan of Waldorf, Md., and granddaughter Kate Meloney of Newport Beach, Calif.; and two brothers, Allen Quinn of Abrahamsville, Pa., and John Quinn of Windsor, NY.
