John “Richard” Karkkainen, Sr., of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died on Monday, February 21, 2011.
The son of George and Lempi Karkkainen, he was born in Turtle Lake, Wisconsin, on July 22, 1930.
Richard grew up in Long Eddy, New York, and attended one-room schools in Eminence and Rock Valley, graduating from DVCS in 1948. Shortly after graduation, he joined the Navy and became an aviation electrician. An avid traveler and outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing from Long Eddy to Long Island, New Mexico to Montana, and Alaska to Finland.
Richard is survived by his wife Wanda of Albuquerque; his son John Jr. of Boyd, Texas; daughter Anne (Karkkainen) DeCoster and her husband Chris of Scottsdale, Arizona; grandchildren Danielle, Geoffrey, and Matthew; his brother Francis and his wife Helen of Long Eddy; his sister Ada (Karkkainen) Herbert and her husband Larry of Deltona, Florida; nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family in the United States and Finland.
