Morris M. ‘Mort’ Cooper

Morris M. “Mort” Cooper of Fremont, NE, died Sunday, October 2, 2011 at A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont. He was 84.
He was born April 19, 1927 at Monticello, NY, to William and Tillie (Goldsmith) Cooper.
He grew up in Monticello and was a graduate of Monticello High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from May 22, 1945 to August 10, 1946. He then attended Kansas State College at Manhattan, KS and graduated in 1951. Mort moved to Fremont in 1951 and worked as a Landscape Architect at the former Plumfield Nursery for 35 years, retiring in 1986. Mort married Mary Anne Elmer on June 24, 1951 in Fremont. She died July 29, 2011. He was a member of the YMCA, the Fremont Golf Club and the Fremont Art Association, and a founder of the Pathfinders Carving Club. He served on the Fremont Parks and Recreation Board and was a former Fremont City Councilman. He was a past president of the Fremont Jaycees in 1956 and the Nebraska Nurserymen’s Association in 1968. Mort is survived by son, Mark Cooper of Lincoln, NE; daughters, Jan Robinson of Omaha, NE, and Cathy and husband, Mark Booth, of Spring Valley, CA; brothers, Gary and wife, Peggy Cooper, Larry and wife, Vivian Cooper, and Allen and wife, Sybil Cooper, all of Monticello; sister, Bonnie and husband Lloyd Daniel of Monterey, CA; aunt, Bobby Avrut of Sacramento, CA; two grandchildren, Jessica and husband, Kyle Hovermale, and Sara Robinson, all of Omaha; and one greatgrandchild, Gavin Hovermale of Omaha.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a greatgrandchild, Caleb Hovermale.

Betty Joyner, 87
January 29, 1924 - October 4, 2011
Betty Joyner of Liberty, a lifetime resident of the area, died Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 87.
The daughter of Clyde and Martha Eltz Joyner, she was born January 29, 1924 in White Sulphur Springs.
She is survived by two nieces, Nancy Kester and her husband James of Depew, NY, and Virginia Baim of San Antonio, Texas; one nephew, Richard Baim and his wife, Cynthia, of Oklahoma City, OK; and grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Doris Baim, her brother-in-law, Elwood Baim, and her nephew, Dennis Baim.
Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery, Liberty, NY.

Marion Thony
Homemaker, 81
Marion Thony of Jeffersonville, a homemaker and lifetime resident of the area, died Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Wayne Woodlands Manor in Waymart, Pa. She was 81.
The daughter of Cyril and Agnes Terrell Hessenauer, she was born November 3, 1929 in Callicoon, NY. She was the widow of Albert E. Thony who passed away in March of 2000.
She was a member of the Jeffersonville Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Aid of the church, and the Red Hat Society.
She is survived by her children, Richard Thony of Jeffersonville, Karen Brannick and her husband Mark of Naples, FL, and Albert D. Thony of Jeffersonville; four grandchildren, Sarah Thony, Andrew Thony and his wife Emily, Michael Sylvester and his companion Rebecca Goyeau, and Jeffrey Brannick; one great-grandson, Oliver; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Hull and Helen Hughson of Jeffersonville; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Hessenauer, and by a sister, Marie Williams.
Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, October 8 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Jeffersonville.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 9 at 2 p.m. at the Jeffersonville Presbyterian Church.
Burial will be in the Jeffersonville Presbyterian Cemetery.
