Martin D. Myers
Ret. from U.S. Postal Service, 90
Martin D. Myers of Eldred passed away Friday, October 21, 2011 at Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty, NY. He was 90.
The son of the late Mary Fee Myers and Martin D. Myers, Sr., Martin was born in Highland Lake, NY, on November 7, 1920. On September 13, 1942, he married his high school sweetheart, Christene Stevens.
Martin is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 69 years, Christene, of Eldred; his children, Patricia and Dennis Toaspern of Binghamton, NY, and Steven and Leesa Myers of Gray, Maine; grandsons and great-grandchildren are Adam Toaspern and his son Kain of Howes Cave, NY, Jeffrey Toaspern and his daughter Miah, of Ithaca, NY, Thomas Myers, and Timothy Myers of Gray, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Jean Ellen; his sisters, Mary Crandall, Ethel Myers, Helen Hulse, and brother Thomas Myers.
Martin was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy stationed at Naval Air Station, NY, as an Aviation Electronic Technician’s Mate. After returning to Eldred, he was employed by Sullivan County Highway Department for 16 years, and retired from the U. S. Postal Service in 1986 after 24 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Post 1363 and a longtime member of the Town of Highland Lions Club where he was past-president and treasurer for many years. His service and friendships were also evident with the National League of Postmasters, where he was Vice-President of the Auxiliary of the New York Branch for several terms.
Although Martin was an active, caring member of his community, his first and foremost love was Christene and their family and happy home. His hard work and attention to detail continues to inspire his family.
Martin’s family thanks the entire staff of SCACC for their patience, care, and the many, many kindnesses shown to both Martin and Christene during her daily visits. The love and thoughtfulness shown by his last community of friends will always be remembered and appreciated.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 24 at the Harrison Rasmussen Funeral Home, 3412 SR97 Barryville, NY, with the Rev. Nancy Vonderhorst officiating.
Burial was in Montoza Cemetery, Eldred.

Walter R. Roemer
Ret. Auto Parts Manager, 86
Walter R. Roemer of Callicoon, NY, peacefully entered into eternal rest at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, October 21, 2011. He was 86.
The son of the late Henry and Margaret Regan Roemer he was born in Fraser’s Settlement, NY. He was married to Elizabeth “Betty” Stone on December 24, 1951; they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year.
Walter was a retired parts manager at Kirchner Chevrolet in Roscoe, and he previously worked at C.E. Mills Chevrolet in Callicoon, and Buddenhagen Ford in Hortonville.
Walter was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a Republican Committeeman and also served as an assessor in the Town of Delaware. He was a Fire Commissioner in the Hortonville Fire District for many years. He also volunteered at the Delaware Youth Center during the 1960s and early 1970s.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, at home; his seven children: Walter Roemer, James Roemer and his wife, Susan, Peggy Sattler and her husband, Jeff, and Thomas Roemer, all of Callicoon, Kathleen Blanchard and her husband, Larry, of Norfolk, VA, Susanne Roemer of Marsing, ID, and Joseph Roemer and his fiancee, Dawn Bortree, of Mechanicsburg, PA; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Roemer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 25 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon. Father Ignatius Smith will officiate.
Burial will be in the Hortonville Cemetery, Hortonville, NY.
