Marylin Lytle Barr
Retired Teacher, 91
Marylin Lytle Barr died peacefully in her home in Grahamsville, NY, on June 13, 2012. She was 91 years old.
Born on August 11, 1920 in Boston, she lived through, contributed to, and exemplified a century of extraordinary change.
A “war bride” in 1942, she raised three children before earning a Master’s Degree in sociology and beginning a quarter-century of teaching in New York City’s Head Start program. In “retirement,” she embraced the opportunity to devote more of her time to writing and publishing poetry, and to creating the watercolor paintings that she often integrated into her poetry readings. A member of the Grahamsville Alchemy Club and the Greater Haverhill Poetry Society in Massachusetts, she was active in the Claryville Quilting Club and the Grahamsville Historical Society where her extensive research reclaimed the history of the 1856 home where she lived with her husband for the last quarter of her life.
She was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. O. Sydney Barr, in 2000; five brothers and sisters, and one nephew.
She leaves her daughters: Margaret Hoover and her husband, John, of Pennsylvania; Joyce Barr of Maine; and Mark Barr and wife, Colleen Berge, of New York City; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Doris Lytle of Ohio; 12 nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on August 11 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Memorial Episcopal Church, 40 Market St., Ellenville, NY 12428 (turn off Route 209 onto Essex St. and go one block to church).
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Daniel Pierce Library, P.O. Box 268, Grahamsville, NY 12740, or to St. Andrew’s Mission (the Episcopal church in So. Fallsburg, NY, which she also attended), c/o Cynthia Johnston, P.O. Box 55, Woodbourne, NY 12788.
