Phyllis M. Hahn
Hairdresser, 79
Phyllis M. Hahn of Jeffersonville, a self-employed hairdresser and lifelong resident, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Orange Regional Medical Center. She was 79.
The daughter of the late Lawrence and Helen Neumann Milk, she was born July 19, 1932 in Callicoon, NY.
She was a graduate of Delaware Valley High School and Binghamton Beauty School.
Phyllis is survived by her cherished husband of 59 years, Eugene, five devoted children: Susan Guba (Peter) of Latham, NY, Pamela Phipps (Bob) of Mechanicsville, VA, David (Kathy) of Jeffersonville, Andrew (Tanya) of Jeffersonville, and Jane Johnson (Rob) of Greenfield Twp., PA; ten beloved grandchildren: Jacklyn, James and Kristin Guba, Ashley and Bryan Phipps, Derek Hahn, Michael and Christopher Hahn and Timothy and Kevin Johnson. They were the highlights of “MeMa’s” life.
Also surviving is a sister, Marion Milk Dumond of Ellenville, NY; a brother-in-law, Richard Hofer of Cochecton Center; and several nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Edith Milk Hofer.
Strong in her faith, Phyllis was a communicant of St. George’s R.C. Church where, through the years, she taught CCD, directed the choir, served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector, and was a member of the Rosary Society. Phyllis and Eugene were honored by The Province of The Most Holy Name of Jesus, The Order of Friars Minor in 1992 for their benevolence.
Phyllis served as President of the Sullivan County Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Assoc. Inc., in 1979 and was a thirty-five year member of the Jeffersonville Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Inc., of which she was EMT of the Year in 1996.
A loving spouse, mother, grandmother and sister, Phyllis’ most treasured times were those spent with family. She also enjoyed camping, and gardening. During her fifty years as a beautician, she not only enjoyed her profession but, even more so the friendships she developed with her customers.
Phyllis’ life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial by Father Vu and Father Joseph Juracek, OFM, at St. George’s Roman Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2012.
Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Youngsville, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Phyllis’ memory be made to St. George’s R. C. Church, Jeffersonville, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, the Jeffersonville Volunteer Ambulance Corps or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Verna K. Hess
Retired Secretary and Homemaker, 80
Verna K. Hess of Callicoon, a retired secretary and homemaker and a lifetime area resident, died Sunday, January 8, 2012 as a result of an automobile accident. She was 80.
The daughter of the late Clarence and Elsie Bauer Simon, she was born August 8, 1931 in Mileses, NY. She was the widow of Roger Hess.
Mrs. Hess was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Liberty, NY.
She is survived by two sons, Dale Hess and his wife Rebekah, and Timothy Hess; two stepsons, George and William Hess; and grandchildren Lukes Hess, Louis Hess, Emma Hess and Jacob Hess. She was predeceased by a sister, Lucille Simon.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, 34 Upper Main Street, Callicoon.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Hortonville Cemetery in Hortonville, NY.
