ELDRED — February 12, 2010 — As expected, Monday night’s Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) Division VI basketball game between the visiting Livingston Manor Lady Wildcats and Eldred Lady Yellowjackets was very close and competitive for the entire 32 minutes.
Eldred and Manor entered the game as the first- and second-place teams, respectively, in the division.
Eldred held an 8-7 lead after the first quarter and the score was tied at 21-21 at halftime and at 36-36 at the end of the third period.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Yellowjackets outscored the Lady Wildcats 10-5 to record a 46-41 victory. The win clinched the Div. VI title for Eldred, which improved its record to 11-2 overall and 6-0 in the division.
After Manor’s Sabrina Hinkley made a baseline jump shot late in the third quarter to even the score at 36-36, Eldred’s Sage Owens put back a missed shot 30 seconds into the fourth period to give her team a lead it would maintain for the rest of the contest.
With 4:55 to go, Manor’s Marissa Diescher drove to the basket and scored to cut the Lady Yellowjackets’ advantage to 39-38.
But Eldred’s Meaghan Hazen responded with a basket 26 seconds later to make it a 41-38 game. Hazen added a jump shot with 1:11 to go and made both free throws of a 1-and-1 situation with 16 seconds remaining to help seal the victory.
Owens, a junior center, and Hazen, a junior forward, each recorded a double-double to lead the Lady Yellowjackets. Owens scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, while Hazen had 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Kim Elvin added five points for Eldred.
“They are a good one-two combination for us,” Eldred Coach Frank Kean said of Owens and Hazen. “The fourth quarter was the difference. We played good defense in the fourth quarter.”
Kean also praised the performance by Diescher, who scored a team-high 22 points for Manor (9-5, 4-2 Div. VI).
“I give Marissa a lot of credit; she kept them going with her shooting and passing,” he said.
Sophomore forward Victoria Davis and sophomore guard Maggi Calo scored eight points and five points, respectively, for the Lady Wildcats.
“Rebounding was the key tonight,” Manor Coach Kevin Clifford said. “Eldred did a great job on the glass.
“They have a good team and they were able to make shots when they needed to,” he added.
