Local basketball teams to play in Section IX Tournaments

SULLIVAN COUNTY — March 2, 2010 — It’s time for some March Madness on the local high school basketball courts.
The postseason began last night and continues throughout the week for several of the county’s scholastic hoops teams.
Eldred, Fallsburg, Livingston Manor and Monticello earned berths in the Section IX Boys’ Basketball Tournament. Eldred, Livingston Manor, Sullivan West and Tri-Valley qualified for the Section IX Girls’ Basketball Tournament.
The Monticello Panthers (7-11) are the No. 6 seed in the boys’ Class A tourney. The Panthers were scheduled to visit No. 3 seed Saugerties (10-7) last night for a quarterfinal game. The winner of last night’s game will play the winner of the quarterfinal between No. 2 Red Hook and No. 7 New Paltz at 6 p.m. Thursday in a semifinal game.
The boys’ Class A championship game is slated for 12:45 p.m. this Sunday, March 7 at SUNY New Paltz.
The Fallsburg Comets (9-9) are the No. 5 seed in the boys’ Class C tourney. The Comets were slated to play at fourth-seeded Chester (10-8) last night in a quarterfinal game.
The winner of that contest will play at No. 1 seed S.S. Seward (16-1) at 6 p.m. tomorrow in the semifinal round.
The boys’ Class B title game is set for 6:45 p.m. this Saturday, March 6 at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh.
The Eldred Yellowjackets and Livingston Manor Wildcats will be playing in the boys’ Class D tournament. No. 3 seed Eldred (8-7) will face No. 2 seed Chapel Field (12-6) in a semifinal game at 6 p.m. tomorrow at a site to be determined. No. 4 seed Manor (5-10) will play at No. 1 seed John A. Coleman Catholic High School (15-2) at 6 p.m. tomorrow in the other semifinal game.
The winners of the semifinal games will play for the boys’ Class D championship at 6:45 p.m. on Friday at Mount Saint Mary College.
The seventh-seeded Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs (9-9) were scheduled to visit No. 2 seed John S. Burke Catholic (11-6) last night for a girls’ Class B quarterfinal game. The winner will play the winner of the quarterfinal contest between No. 3 Spackenkill (14-2) and No. 6 Marlboro (10-6) in a semifinal game tomorrow at a time and location to be announced.
The winner of that semifinal and the semifinal between the winners of the quarterfinal games between No. 1 Highland (12-6) vs. No. 8 Onteora (9-8) and No. 4 James I. O’Neill (11-6) and No. 5 Ellenville (14-3) will meet in the girls’ Class B title game at 2:30 p.m. this Sunday, March 7 at SUNY New Paltz.
The Tri-Valley Lady Bears (14-3) earned the No. 1 seed in the girls’ Class C tournament. T-V will host fourth-seeded Rhinebeck (3-8) at 6 p.m. tomorrow in a semifinal game. The winner of that game will meet the winner of the semifinal between No. 2 Tuxedo (12-5) and No. 3 Millbrook (4-8) for the girls’ Class C title at 5 p.m. this Saturday, March 6 at Mount Saint Mary College.
The No. 2 Eldred Lady Yellowjackets (13-2) were scheduled to host the No. 3 Livingston Manor Lady Wildcats (12-5) last night in a girls’ Class D semifinal. The winner of the game will play the winner of the other semifinal between top-seeded Coleman Catholic (15-3) and No. 4 Chapel Field (10-6) for the girls’ Class D championship at 5 p.m. Friday at Mount Saint Mary College.
