VALHALLA — March 9, 2010 — A combination of strong pressure defense and good perimeter shooting proved to be the winning formula for Sullivan County Community College (SCCC) on Wednesday night, March 3 as the Generals ran past third-seeded Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), 98-81, in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Region XV title game at Westchester Community College.
The victory gave top-seeded SCCC the Region XV Championship and an automatic bid to the NJCAA Division III Men’s Basketball National Championship Tournament from this Thursday, March 11 through Saturday, March 13 at SUNY Delhi.
In their last visit to the National Tournament in 2006-2007, the Generals capped an undefeated season and took home the title.  In all, SCCC has raised four NJCAA Division III National Championship banners in their Loch Sheldrake gymnasium.
This is the Generals’ national record 12th NJCAA Region XV Championship. They will be making their 10th trip to the NJCAA National Championship Tournament this week, which is also an NJCAA national record.
SCCC (31-1) will begin play in the NJCAA Division III Tournament at 3 p.m. Thursday with a game versus Rochester (Minn.) Community & Technical College.
Against FIT, the Generals sank 10 3-pointers and shot nearly 50 percent from long range. Sophomore guard Moses Dayee, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, led the balanced SCCC scoring attack with 21 points.
Sophomore forward Evan Pope added 19 points as a total of six Generals finished in double figures.
Dayee and sophomore forward Geraldo Fernandez each made four 3-point shots on the evening. Fernandez finished the game with 16 points.
Also scoring in double figures for the Generals were Jason Givens (13 points), Dwayne Wade (11 points) and Terry Coleman (10 points).
Garfield Burchette of FIT led all scorers with 23 points. His teammate and Region XV Player-of-the-Year Corey Jackson netted 21 points.
The Region XV All-Tournament Team was announced during the postgame awards ceremony. In addition to MVP Dayee, the all-tourney team included: William Holley of Kingsborough, Jefferson Guillaume of Nassau, Kyle Sierra of FIT, Corey Jackson of FIT and Terry Coleman of SCCC.
