WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — July 16, 2010 — The White Sulphur Springs Fire Department defeated the visiting Swan Lake Fire Department on Tuesday evening in an Eastern Sullivan Firefighters Softball League game at Gary A. Bradley Field at the White Sulphur Springs Firemen’s Park.
But WSSFD had to withstand a seventh-inning comeback by Swan Lake FD to record a 12-8 victory.
Trailing 12-5 entering the top of the seventh inning, Swan Lake FD was determined to score at least seven runs to tie the game. With two outs and teammate Vinny Wallgren on base, Kyle VanWolde stepped into the batter’s box. VanWolde then hit the ball into left field and kept on running around the bases for a two-run, inside-the-park home run.
Mike Parks then singled to center field to keep the inning going for Swan Lake FD. The next batter, Keith Torrens, singled to right field and Parks scored on the hit to make it a 12-8 game.
But WSSFD pitcher Ryan Calkin got the next batter to ground out to seal his team’s four-run win.
WSSFD (7-3) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded, Joe Decker reached base on an error and Matt DeWitt and Josh Schwartz both scored on the play. Devin Day then singled to right field, which allowed Mike Black to cross home plate and give WSSFD a 3-0 advantage.
Moments later, Black and Day both scored on Nick Scheibe’s base hit.
Swan Lake FD (7-4) got on the scoreboard in the top of the second. Torrens and Tim Eronimous both scored on an error and Taylor VanKeuren scored on a single by Keegan LaGattuta to make it a 5-3 game.
WSSFD extended its lead to 9-3 with four runs in the bottom of the third. Schwartz blasted a two-run home run over the left-center field fence and Day hit a two-run double.
In the bottom of the fourth, Carl Yaun and DeWitt both scored on a single by Decker. Those two runs pushed WSSFD’s advantage to 11-3.
Swan Lake FD scored a run in the top of the fifth and another in the top of the sixth to close its deficit to 11-5. The fifth-inning run was scored by VanKeuren when Leon Zayas hit a sacrifice fly. Torrens scored the sixth-inning run when he hit an inside-the-park homer.
DeWitt scored the final run for WSSFD in the bottom of the sixth when Decker reached base on a fielder’s choice.
