SWAN LAKE — July 16, 2010 — L&B Tack defeated the Nugget, 7-3, on Monday night in a Sullivan County Women’s Softball League game at the Swan Lake Firefighters’ Max Eronimous Field.
Despite the threat of rain, the weather held out until after the game was completed.
The Nugget played aggressively in the top of the first inning. Four hits in the frame enabled Jess Ashcroft, Karen Perello and Courtney Finn to score runs to give the Nugget a 3-0 lead.
After Nugget pitcher Danielle Lichwicki walked Liz Stubits in the bottom of the first, Trish Tuttle hit a single to bring Stubits home. Tuttle also crossed home plate in the inning, which allowed L&B Tack to cut the Nugget’s advantage to 3-2.
L&B Tack pitcher Barb Merton then tossed a 1-2-3 top of the second inning.
In the bottom of the second, Holli Schoonmaker and Jamie Hopkins each scored a run to give L&B Tack a 4-3 lead.
L&B Tack increased its advantage to 7-3 in the bottom of the third as Lori Froehlich, Denice Smith and Fran Kaiser each scored a run.
The score remained 7-3 for the remainder of the game due to the excellent defense played by both teams and the strong pitching of Lichwicki and Stubits.
“We like playing this team,” Sam Biro of the Nugget said after the game. “They are a lot of fun.”
