LOCH SHELDRAKE — July 20, 2010 — A total of 38 boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 16 worked on their basketball skills last week during the annual Sullivan Generals Basketball Camp on the Loch Sheldrake campus of Sullivan County Community College (SCCC).
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, the campers practiced dribbling, passing and shooting in SCCC’s Paul Gerry Fieldhouse. They also competed in several contests, including foul shooting, a 3-point shoot out, dribble obstacle course, hot shot, 1-on-1, 3-on-3 and H-O-R-S-E.
Coaches for this year’s camp included Chris DePew, who is the SCCC Athletic Director, Kevin DeVantier (SCCC Men’s Basketball Coach), Gregg Semenetz (SCCC Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach) and Diana Traugot (SCCC Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach). In addition, Rob Barrese, who is the Strength and Conditioning Coach at SCCC, did some drills with the campers every day.
At the end of Friday’s camp session, the coaches and campers gathered on the court for an awards ceremony. Every boy and girl received a participation certificate, a Sullivan Generals T-shirt and a Sullivan Generals water bottle. The winners of the aforementioned contests received special certificates and Most Improved Player (MIP), Most Valuable (MVP) and Hustle Award trophies were presented to three campers in the ages groups of 6-9, 10-12 and 13 and up.
“You all did a good job this week,” DeVantier said to the young players. “We have given you some information about drills you can do at home. We hope you will join us again next year. Good luck this season whether you’re playing varsity, JV, modified or pee-wee basketball. Keep working hard.”
DePew noted that the camp was a success.
“It’s always great to have these local kids here learning about the game at our summer basketball camp,” he said. “We had a great week of camp. It was a lot of fun. We would like to have more kids here, but it is what it is.
“Kevin [DeVantier] took over for me as the camp director this year,” DePew added. “He did a great job. It was a really positive experience for everyone.”
