Hundreds compete in the Forestburgh 5K Run/Walk

By Rob Potter
FORESTBURGH — August 17, 2010 — A total of 133 athletes competed in the fourth annual Forestburgh 5K Run/Walk on Saturday morning near Lake Joseph.
The competitors started the race at the intersection of Adam Road and Lake Joseph Road. After making their way along the scenic 3.1-mile course, which includes an off-road section, the competitors crossed the finish line about a hundred yards from the start.
The winner of the race was Reed Scott Jr. The 15-year-old Jeffersonville resident ran the course in a time of 19:21.9.
“It was a good race,” Scott said. “The hill wasn’t as bad as they said it would be.”
This was the first time Scott has run in the Forestburgh 5K.
“It’s a pretty good course,” he said.
Scott said that he will probably compete in next year’s event.
The first woman to cross the finish line was Katy Schlichtman of Wurtsboro, who ran the race with her running partner Dario Deerhaven Deninno, a German short-haired pointer.
Schlichtman’s time was 21:00.5.
“This was the first time I have run this race and the first time Dario has run in a race,” said Schlichtman, who spent this summer as an intern with the Sullivan County District Attorney’s office and will be entering her second year at Touro Law School in Center Islip, Long Island this fall. “I like this course, it’s really great.”
Schlichtman, who also works at Bashakill Vineyards, plans to run in next year’s Forestburgh 5K.
“Sullivan County is my home, so I’ll be back,” she said.
As the runners and walkers gathered at the starting line, Race Director Anthony Kane thanked all of them for participating and reminded them that all of the race proceeds benefit Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc. He also introduced two special guests: New York State Senator John Bonacic and Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc. President and CEO Dan Grady.
Following the race, Kane thanked all of the sponsors and volunteers for their help in making the event a success.
“We have to thank everybody for coming out and supporting this event,” he said. “We had a great race today.”
The race raised about $13,500 for Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc.
The race committee members included: Anthony and Nancy Kane, Dr. Gary and Rose Berson, Ann and Jim Culligan, Ellen Galligan and Gene and Shirley Blabey.
