Fall sports season begins for high school teams

SULLIVAN COUNTY — September 3, 2010 — It’s that time of year again.
While classes in Sullivan County’s eight high schools do not begin until next week, many of the county’s scholastic sports teams began their 2010 fall season yesterday or will start their seasons over the next couple of days.
The Liberty and Monticello girls’ tennis teams began their respective seasons yesterday with Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) matches. The Monticello Lady Panthers hosted Warwick at DeHoyos Park in Monticello, while the Liberty Lady Indians visited James I. O’Neill.
Beginning at 9 a.m. today, Eldred, Ellenville, Monticello and Tri-Valley will play opening round games in the 2010 Tri-Valley Invitational Girls’ Soccer Tournament in Grahamsville.
Three county football teams open their seasons with non-league games that kick off tonight at 7 p.m. Fallsburg will play its first ever varsity football game when it hosts Onteora at Morningside Park. Monticello will play its first varsity football game in 75 years when it visits Highland. And the Sullivan West Bulldogs will be on the road to face New Paltz.
Tomorrow, the county’s four other scholastic football teams start their 2010 campaigns. In the afternoon, the defending Section IX Class D champion Eldred Yellowjackets will host Section IV’s Deposit in a non-league game, the Liberty Indians will welcome Rondout Valley for a non-league contest and the Livingston Manor/Roscoe Devilcats will play at Section IV’s Harpursville in a non-league game.
All three of those games are scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.
Then at 7 p.m., the Tri-Valley Bears will visit the Ellenville Blue Devils for a non-league game.
