Sullivan West honors fall sports athletes

By Rob Potter
LAKE HUNTINGTON — November 26, 2010 — The Sullivan West Central School District held its 2010 Fall Sports Awards Presentation on Tuesday night in the SW High School auditorium.
An audience filled with parents, family members, friends and school officials watched as Athletic Director David Franskevicz and the coaches recognized the student-athletes who competed for the Bulldog and Lady Bulldog teams this autumn. Each coach spoke about their season, presented certificates and letters to their athletes and honored two players with special awards.
High School Principal Margaret Tenbus welcomed everyone to the ceremony.
“Kids today get a bad reputation. They are called computer junkies and couch potatoes, but those aren’t our kids,” Tenbus said. “Our students are up at 6:30 a.m., in classes until 2:30 p.m., then it’s practice, practice, practice until around 6 or 7 [p.m.], then they get home and do their homework and on game nights they don’t get home until 9 or 10 [p.m.]. But because our Sullivan West athletes are students first, they are right back at it the next day.”
After Catherine Peters, who is a senior on the girls’ varsity soccer team, sang the national anthem, Franskevicz congratulated all of the student-athletes and coaches for a successful fall season.
“Our volleyball team qualified for sectionals for the fourth year in a row,” Franskevicz said. “In cross country, two runners, Kelsey Dutton and Dani Myers, ran in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championship Meet. Congratulations to the volleyball and girls’ soccer teams for earning New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Team Awards. Ten of the 13 members of the volleyball team qualified for the award and 18 of the 22 members of the girls’ soccer team qualified.”
In their remarks, the coaches spoke of the season’s highlights and thanked the athletes, parents, school administrators and staff members and volunteers for all of their assistance during the recently completed fall season.
Girls’ cross country Coach George Shakelton said he “didn’t want the season to end.
“I want to thank all of the girls for such a great season,” he added. “These girls never complained once.”
Girls’ soccer Coach Mike Ellmauer noted that his team “had a nice mix of seniors and players who were new to the program. They worked well together.”
Football Coach Ron Bauer said, “We had guys who gave 100 percent and left everything they had out on the field.”
At the end of the evening, Richard Ross of sportsinsightsny.com presented a power point show featuring candid and action photos of the SW fall athletes.
