LIVINGSTON MANOR — December 14, 2010 — The Eldred Lady Yellowjackets got off to a great start in Friday night’s non-league basketball game against the host Livingston Manor Lady Wildcats.
Senior center Sage Owens scored a layup and made a pair of free throws and senior forward Meaghan Hazen added a layup and a baseline jumper to help the Lady Yellowjackets take a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
But during the second and third quarters, Manor outscored Eldred (0-2) by a combined 41-21 margin to take a 48-35 advantage into the fourth period.
Those final eight minutes of play were relatively even as the Lady Wildcats posted a 63-47 victory.
Manor (2-0) turned up its defensive pressure in the second and third periods, which often led to steals or turnovers and baskets on the other end of the floor. With 51 seconds left in the second period, Eldred’s Kim Elvin made a 3-point shot to give her team a 26-24 lead. Eighteen seconds later, Manor’s Victoria Davis scored a basket inside the lane to tie the score.
Just three seconds after Davis’ basket, Samantha Scott gave the Lady Wildcats a 28-26 advantage by converting an easy basket after a steal.
Manor then continued to build upon its lead for the rest of the game. The lead grew to double digits at 43-32 when Marissa Diescher converted a basket in transition with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter.
“We played good defense tonight,” Manor Co-Coach Kevin Clifford said. “Our defense created offensive opportunities for us.
“Victoria Davis came off the bench and gave us a boost on offense and defense,” added Clifford, who is guiding the Lady Wildcats along with Co-Coach Becky Ahart. “Victoria and Kiera Browne did a great job of defending Sage Owens, who is a very good player inside the lane.”
Diescher led the Manor offense with a double-double of a game-high 31 points and 17 rebounds. She also dished out five assists and made three steals.
Monay Allen had nine points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Lady Wildcats, while Browne and Davis each scored six points. Browne also grabbed eight rebounds and Davis recorded five rebounds and two steals.
Also contributing for the Lady Wildcats were Paige Clancy (five rebounds, two steals), Scott (two steals) and Angela Zayas (three steals).
“Their defense helped them win the game,” Eldred Coach Jolene Porter said of the Lady Wildcats. “We played good defense, too. But we didn’t box out to get rebounds and we didn’t take open shots. We also didn’t pass the ball to open players.”
Hazen led the Lady Yellowjackets with 19 points, while Owens and Elvin netted 12 points and eight points, respectively.
