Snow's just right for skiing Holiday

By Fred Stabert III
BRIDGEVILLE — The weather outside might be frightful, but for the dozens of interscholastic skiers who have been swooshing down the hills at Holiday Mtn, it is near perfect. Area ski teams from Fallsburg/Tri-Valley, Monticello, Sullivan West and Liberty competed with teams from Onteora, Kingston and Rondout on Tuesday night in the Giant Slalom event.
The combined team of Fallsburg/Tri-Valley finished just under five seconds out of first place with a total team time of 1:37.44. Onteora won the team event in a time of 1:32.81.
Monticello placed third (1:38.81) while Sullivan West (1:46.56) took sixth and Liberty (1:49.31) took seventh.
Leading Sullivan County racers were the Heins’ brothers from Monticello, Ryan and Richard. The dynamic duo finished fifth and sixth respectively in times of 23.32 and 23.42.
Sullivan West’s Alex Lander (23.52) finished in seventh place while Fallsburg’s John Bernstein (23.64) took ninth.
On the girls’ side of the ledger, Monticello took second place, just over five seconds behind first place Onteora.
Monticello finished with a team time of 1:44.94 to edge out third place Fallsburg/Tri-Valley, who skied to a 1:47.15 time. In fourth place was Sullivan West (1:58.31).
Monticello Kaley Heins kept up the family tradition by finishing as the top Sullivan County skier in a time of 24.85. She finished third overall in the race behind Marlise Combe (23.37) and Claire Wilsey (24.37) of Onteora.
Also in the top ten of Sullivan County skiers were Monticello Devinne Depuy (26.03) in eighth place; Fallsburg’s Sarah Coney (26.06) in ninth; and Sullivan West’s Kassie Thelman (26.11) in tenth.
Wednesday Features Slalom Racing
Things stayed pretty much the same during Wednesday night’s Orange County League Slalom Ski Race with Onteora winning on both the Girls’ and Boys’ side.
Second place honors went to Monticello, which had four racers in the top 18 spots. Leading the way for the Monties were Haley Heins (35.52) in fourth place; Devinne Depuy (36.53) in sixth and Rachel Klein (38.73) in twelfth.
In third place were the Fallsburg Comets led by Kendra Erts (37.39) in ninth place overall; and Lauren Elliott (39.09) in fourteenth place.
Sullivan West came in fourth behind the strong efforts of Kassie Thelman (36.60) in seventh and sister Kellee Thelman (38.63) in eleventh.
