SULLIVAN COUNTY The Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs indoor track team made school history on Friday evening.
The Lady Bulldogs earned the first sectional championship in either indoor or outdoor track by winning the Section IX Class B title meet in Gillis Field House at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
During the 2006-2007 season, the SW boys’ team won the Section IX Class B indoor track championship.
On Friday night, the Lady Bulldogs scored 132 points to place first, while Millbrook was second with 87 points. Tri-Valley, which won the title last season, finished third with 85 points.
Leading the Lady Bulldogs to their victory were Rianne Erlwein, Morgan Hawkins and Katie Manzi.
Hawkins, a junior, won two events, the 1,000-meter run (3:12.13) and pole vault (8-0). She also placed fourth in the 600 (1:50.28).
Erlwein, a sophomore, won the 3,000 (11:38.67), placed third in the 1,000 (3:14.01) and was fourth in the 1,500 (5:29.17).
Manzi, a junior, won the 300 in a time of 44.78 seconds. She was also part of two relay teams which earned second-place finishes. In the 800 relay, Manzi and teammates Liz Peters, Kasi Pilny and Amanda Rosenberger posted a time of 2:03.05. In the 1,600 Manzi, Pilny, Rosenberger and Peters recorded a time of 4:36.10.
The sectional championship caps off a regular season in which SW finished a perfect 21-0 to win the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) Division V title.
“From a coaching perspective, it’s the kind of season you always hope for, but don’t expect to have,” SW Coach Joe Seidl said yesterday morning.
He noted that the Lady Bulldogs competed against teams from 13 other schools in Friday night’s meet, which makes their accomplishment even more impressive.
“I don’t deserve credit for the title, the credit goes to all of these young ladies,” Seidl said. “They have been working like heck since our team practices began in November.”
