SWAN LAKE Mr. Willy’s was able to defeat L&B Too, 11-3 , in Wednesday night’s Sullivan County Women’s Softball League (SCWSL) game at Max Eronimous Firefighter Field in Swan Lake.
Mr. Willy’s, a SCWSL “A” Division team, started strong by scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. Leadoff batter Erica Boyd singled and started the momentum. Mr Willy’s pitcher Kim Jay then doubled and Ashley Mann singled to load the bases. Megan Ellison was up and she didn’t disappoint, connecting with the ball to drive two runs home.
Diane Meyer was next at the plate and she singled. Linnea O’Mara then hit a two-run single. Heather Sherwood singled then Megan Reichmann doubled, allowing both Sherwood and O’Mara to score.
When L&B Too, a SCWSL “B” Division team, came up to bat in the bottom of the first, leadoff batter Lynnie Eisenbach grounded out. But Becky Decker tripled and then scored off Tini Kaiser’s single. Mr. Willy’s then got two quick outs in the field to end the inning.
A great hit to center field by Jay started off the top of the second, but L&B Too pitcher Liz Giumarra and her defense were able to then record three outs before Mr. Willy’s could score.
Mr. Willy’s held L&B Too scoreless in the bottom of the second.
The top of the third started out with a single by O’Mara, who was tagged out at second base after Sherwood singled. Reichmann then slammed a hit through the gap to center field, allowing Sherwood to score.
Cindy LaRuffa then singled but was tagged out at second on Rebecca Ramirez’s single. However Reichmann was able to score on Ramirez’s hit to give Mr. Willy’s an 8-1 lead.
Jennifer Margolis and Boyd both singled and Ramirez then scored on Jay’s single. Mann grounded out to end the inning, but Mr. Willy’s still enjoyed a 9-1 advantage.
L&B Too came out swinging in the bottom of the third inning. Susan Vazquez and Eisenbach both reached base and were able to score off a double from Decker. Jay then retired the next two batters on a flyout and a groundout to end the inning. But L&B Too (4-7) had cut the Mr. Willy’s lead to 9-3.
Neither team scored in the fourth inning.
Mr. Willy’s looked to extend its lead in the top of the fifth. With one out, Ramirez singled and remained there as another out was recorded. Boyd kept the inning alive with a single. Ramirez then scored off Jay’s double. Mann then singled to drive in Boyd to push the Mr. Willy’s lead to 11-3.
