SWAN LAKE The Nugget softball team set the tone for Tuesday night’s Sullivan County Women’s Softball League (SCWSL) game at Max Eronimous Swan Lake Firefighters Field by scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Those runs erased a 2-0 lead that Holiday Mountain took in the top of the first.
The Nugget went on to record a 16-3 victory over Holiday Mountain, a fellow SCWSL “B” Division team.
Holiday Mountain leadoff batter Rebekha Wilcox began the top of the first with a double. She scored the first run of the game when Kim Peck singled.
Peck scored the second Holiday Mountain run when Jenn Rundle singled.
Ashley Soules, who started the bottom of the first with an infield single, put The Nugget (6-6) on the scoreboard when she crossed home plate on an error. Moments later, Lisa Wood scored the tying run on a single by Jordan Sudek.
RBI singles by Teresa Colvin and Karen Warden and a two-run hit by Danielle Lichwick gave The Nugget a 6-2 lead.
The Nugget added three more runs in the frame thanks to Soules’ RBI double and Karen Perrello’s two-run double.
After neither team scored in the second and third innings, The Nugget expanded its advantage in the bottom of the fourth. Perrello scored on a single to center field by Sudek and Patti Andersen scored on a double by Colvin to make it an 11-2 game.
The Nugget added two more runs in the inning as Jessie Ashcraft and Danielle Lichwick each had an RBI single.
In the bottom of the fifth, The Nugget stretched its lead to 16-2. Soules and Perrello both crossed the plate when Sudek singled. Andersen scored the team’s final run of the evening when Ashcraft hit into a fielder’s choice.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Holiday Mountain (4-8) registered its final run in the top of the seventh.
With one out, the team loaded the bases as Chrissy Loucks singled, Jaz Felder reached base on an error and Sara Fimognari singled. The next batter, Katie Hanson, ripped a single to center field to bring Loucks in to score.
Felder also tried to score on Hanson’s hit, but Felder was tagged out at home plate by The Nugget catcher Lichwick after a fine throw from center fielder Ashcraft.
The Nugget pitcher Sue Sakell then induced an infield pop fly, which shortstop Colvin caught to end the game.
