Klein and Sons, Sonny's score victories

MONGAUP VALLEY — On Tuesday evening, Edward M. Collins Memorial Park in Mongaup Valley played host to a Sullivan County Women’s Softball League (SCWSL) doubleheader.
In the opening game, Klein and Sons Logging defeated International Contractors Corporation (ICC) by the final score of 34-5. The game was called after the fifth inning due to the SCWSL’s 15-run mercy rule.
In the second game of the night, Sonny’s Service Center topped C&C Plumbing and Heating, 18-13, in a “B” Division contest.
Big innings lead to victory for Klein and Sons Logging
Klein and Sons, a SCWSL “A” Division team, had three big innings on its way to posting a lopsided victory over C&C, a SCWSL “B” Division team.
Klein and Sons scored six runs in the top of the first, four runs in the top of the second and 22 runs in the top of the fifth.
Heading into the top of the fifth, Klein and Sons (15-2) held a 12-5 lead. The team sent 27 batters to the plate during the inning and enjoyed a 34-5 advantage at the end of the frame.
Leading the Klein and Sons offense were Kayla Scannell, Nikomi Thompson and Chelsea Reuss. Scannell hit a pair of three-run inside-the-park home runs in the inning, while Thompson and Reuss each hit a solo inside-the-park homer.
ICC (4-8) scored all of its runs in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the second, Samantha Adriaans, Katie Lemery and Elaine Moriggia all reached base and came around to cross home plate.
Samantha Adriaans led off the bottom of the third by belting an inside-the-park home run to deep left-center field. After an out was recorded, Lemery reached base on an error. She then scored when Mary Adriaans hit a bloop single to left field.

Sonny’s grabbed an early lead against C&C, but had to rally later in the contest to earn the victory.
In the top of the first, Sonny’s (13-3) took a 6-0 lead. Janet Calangelo, Kathy Jo Hoyt, Jeanne Melchick and Carly Sklar each had an RBI single in the inning.
C&C (0-19) answered with two runs in the top of the second. Christa Reinshagen and Connie Velders both reached base by hitting a single. They both scored on Rose Crespo’s triple.
C&C tied the game at 6-6 in the top of third. Elisa Bound and Renay Crespo each hit an RBI single and Bound scored on a groundout by Reinshagen to make it 6-5 game.
Renay Crespo scored the tying run when Rose Crespo singled to center field.
Sonny’s retook the lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the third.
But C&C scored three runs in the top of the fourth to grab a 9-8 advantage. Amy Beckley scored on a single by Tabatha Bound and Bound scored on an error to even the score at 8-8.
Elisa Bound gave C&C a 9-8 lead by crossing home plate as Reinshagen hit into a fielder’s choice.
Shannon Weigand hit a two-run double to key the Sonny’s offense in the bottom of the fourth. The team scored seven runs in the frame to take a 15-9 lead.
C&C made it a 15-10 game in the top of the fifth as Tabatha Bound scored on a triple by Elisa Bound.
Jessie Simmons and Hoyt each had an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth as Sonny’s pushed its advantage to 18-10.
C&C scored three runs in the top of the sixth. Velders crossed home plate on a fielder’s choice by Colleen Freer to make the score 18-11. Freer scored moments later on a single by Carolyn Rodriguez. Kat Wilkinson scored on Tabatha Bound’s infield hit to bring C&C to within five runs at 18-13.
But Sonny’s pitcher Hoyt ended the inning by getting the next batter to ground out.
Hoyt gave up a walk and a hit between the first two outs of the top of the seventh. But she recorded a strikeout to end the game and secure her team’s five-run win.
