CALLICOON As of noon on Wednesday, Mike Chanov was the leader of the Democrat’s 36th annual Big Buck Contest.
Last Saturday, which was the opening day of the regular firearm deer hunting season in Sullivan County and the rest of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Southern Zone, Chanov took a 9-point buck in the Town of Liberty. Chanov then transported the buck to the Monticello Firehouse, which is one of the official measuring stations for the Democrat contest.
Chanov’s buck scored 74.25 in the Democrat measuring system for the Biggest Rack Division of the contest. The buck, which weighed 166 lbs., also leads the Heaviest Deer Division of the contest.
The Democrat contest is for bucks which have been legally shot here in Sullivan County or in Wayne County, Pa. The regular firearm deer hunting season continues here in Sullivan County through Sunday, Dec. 13.
The regular firearm deer season in Wayne County, Pa. begins next Monday, Nov. 30 and continues through Saturday, Dec. 12.
