Sullivan Striders Win Intraclub Challenge

HAMPTONBURGH — March 16, 2007 — On Sunday, March 11, the Sullivan Striders Club captured the first place trophy at the sixth annual Intraclub Challenge.
The Intraclub Challenge is a 5K (3.1mile) run at Thomas Bull Park in Hamptonburgh that includes members of four area running clubs: Bronx Road Runners, Orange Runners Club, Rockland Road Runners and Sullivan Striders Club.
Each runner scored points for their team based on their overall finish and where they placed in their age group. All participants who were not among the best finishers in their age group but still completed the race earned a point for their team.
After finishing second by just a few points in two of the previous Intraclub Challenges, the Sullivan Striders Club (SSC) finally earned the championship trophy. SSC scored 183 points to edge the Rockland Road Runners (RRR), who earned 177 points, for the title.
The Orange Runners Club (ORC) amassed 89 points to place third and the Bronx Road Runners (BRR) finished fourth with 33 points.
“It was a proud day for the Sullivan Striders,” said Tom Manza, who is a longtime member of the Sullivan Striders Club. “We finally won it after coming close a number of times. We had a great team led by Brendan Devine and Jean Norton.”
SSC teammates Devine and Andy Latincsics crossed the finish line with identical times of 16 minutes, 6 seconds. But officials ruled that the 16-year-old Devine was a split second ahead of the 41-year-old Latincsics. As a result, Devine was declared the winner and Latincsics took second place.
The first woman to cross the finish line was SSC’s Norton. The 44-year-old Wurtsboro resident finished in a time of 18:38.
Manza noted that the Sullivan Striders knew they had a strong group of men competing in the event, but that the club’s women runners had a great day.
“We got 70-plus points from our ladies,” Manza said. “That was huge, it put us over the top.”
He also noted that having a large team of runners was also a key to the Sullivan Striders’ victory.
“We had 26 people running in the event,” Manza commented. “If one or two of those people had not been there, we probably would have lost.”
