LIBERTY April 3, 2007 Justin Garritt, a senior at Liberty Central School, recently completed an outstanding scholastic skiing career.
For the past six years, Garritt has been a member of Liberty’s varsity alpine ski team. He tested up in eighth grade and has been competing on the varsity level ever since.
Garritt has been the captain of the Indians’ ski team for the past two years. He has also been awarded the ski team’s Most Valuable Player trophy at the annual Liberty Central School Athletics Dinner every year since ninth grade.
Garritt qualified for the Section IX championships each year from eighth grade through 12th grade. He also qualified for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) championship meet as a sophomore, junior and senior.
This winter, Garritt qualified for the Section IX meet at Belleayre Mountain, NYSPHSAA meet in Lake Placid, High School Eastern Regional Championships at Cannon Mountain and the Empire State Games in Lake Placid.
“I am thrilled with this year,” Garritt commented. “It was great to end my high school skiing career this way.”
Garritt said that he hopes to continue skiing in college. Two of the schools he is considering are Castleton State College in Rutland, Vt. which Garritt noted is just minutes away from Killington Ski Resort and St. Bonaventure University in western New York State.
Some of the highlights of Garritt’s 2006-2007 season are as follows:
January 30 took third place in an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) Divisional Race at Holiday Mountain
Jan. 31 Earned third place in Divisional Race at Holiday Mountain
February 1 Took fifth place in Divisional Race at Belleayre Mountain
Feb. 2 Placed seventh in Divisional Race at Belleayre Mountain
Feb. 7 Finished third in Divisional Race at Holiday Mountain
Feb. 8 Earned ninth place in Divisional Race at Belleayre Mountain
Feb. 18 During a USSA (United States Ski Association) race, qualified for the Empire State Games for the first time.
Feb. 21 Placed fourth at Section IX Championships at Belleayre and qualified for state meet in Lake Placid for the third consecutive year
Feb. 23, 24 and 25 Placed 24th in the Slalom and was chosen to light the torch during Opening Ceremonies.
Feb. 26 and 27 Competed at the NYSPHSAA state championships in Lake Placid and placed in the top 10 combined in the state by finishing 16th in the Slalom and 17th in the Giant Slalom. Was Awarded the 2007 Section IX Alpine Skiing Sportsman of the Year. Qualified for the High School Eastern Regional Championships at Cannon Mountain.
March 17 and 18 Competed in the High School Regional Championships. Placed 42nd in the Slalom and 46th in the Giant Slalom.
In addition, Garritt helped the 2007 Liberty boys’ varsity alpine ski team win its third straight OCIAA Scholar-Athlete team award with a 94 average.
