SCCC PITCHER COREY Van Keuren, who is seen here throwing a strike during the Generals’ spring training trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. last month, earned his first collegiate victory on Saturday when SCCC defeated Westchester Community College, 8-3, in the first game of a Region XV doubleheader.

Sullivan Generals Sweep Westchester For First Region Wins

VALHALLA — April 10, 2007 — The Sullivan County Community College (SCCC) Generals won their first two Region XV games of the baseball season on Saturday with 8-3 and 6-5 victories in a doubleheader against the host West-chester Community College Westcos.
In the opener, SCCC pitcher Corey VanKeuren threw a complete game to pick up his first collegiate win. He struck out seven batters and scattered seven hits.
Chris Gonzalez and Lenin Sepulveda led the Generals’ offensive attack as they each hit a double in the team’s 8-3 triumph.
“Corey gave us a big lift today,” SCCC Coach Mike Marra said. “He mixed his pitches and threw strikes and our defense made plays behind him all day.”
In the second game, the Generals’ Mark Roarty hit the game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth. The long out allowed Chris Daniels to score from third base and give SCCC a 6-5 victory.
Roarty went 2-for-4 in the game. Also pacing the Generals’ offense were Chris Gonzalez, Ali Ferreiras and Jonathan Valerio. Gonzalez had two hits and two RBIs, Ferreiras went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Valerio blasted a solo home run.
“We were down 3-0 and 5-2 and came back to tie it in the fifth [inning] and win it in the ninth, which shows a lot of character in our club,” Marra said.
Daniels picked up the win by pitching 3 and 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
With the sweep of the Westcos, SCCC improved to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in Region XV competition
The Generals are scheduled to be back in action tonight. The team will face Rockland Community College at 6 p.m. in a Region XV game in Suffern.
