'Slo'burn: Sullivan Fire builds on lead over Hornbecks

By Rob Potter
LIBERTY — The Sullivan Fire softball team wasn’t rattled a bit after falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning of their Liberty Slo-Pitch League “A” Division game on Tuesday night at the Liberty Elementary School field.
Sullivan Fire responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
As the game progressed, Sullivan Fire added to its lead and recorded an 18-6 victory over Hornbeck’s.
Richie Edwards gave Sullivan Fire (9-7) a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first when he scored on a sacrifice fly by Dana Presto.
Sullivan Fire extended its advantage to 9-2 in the bottom of the third. Timmy Minton had an RBI single and the next batter, Steve Rogg, smacked a line drive to right field for a bases-clearing, three-run single. Rogg then scored on an error to give Sullivan Fire an 8-2 lead. Moments later, James Ratner crossed home plate on a base hit by Matt Briggs to make it a 9-2 contest.
Sullivan Fire added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Presto crossed home plate when Minton belted a triple to right field and Ratner brought home Minton with a sacrifice fly.
Displaying a never-give-up attitude, Hornbeck’s narrowed the Sullivan Fire lead to 11-5 in the top of the sixth.
With one out, Bob DuPont ripped a triple to right field. After Sullivan Fire pitcher Dan Ricco recorded a strikeout, DuPont scored when Manny Oquendo reached base on an error.
Nick Washburn then singled to right field to send Oquendo home. Following a single by Jason Mekulik, Will Budd hit the ball back up the middle to plate Washburn.
Sullivan Fire regained the momentum in the bottom of the sixth by adding seven runs to its column in the scorebook. Key hits in the frame included back-to-back RBI singles by Wesley Olivo and Chris Smith and Presto’s two-run single.
Hornbeck’s scored the final run of the contest in the top of the seventh. With one out, Dan Cavanagh blasted a triple to center field. He then scored on an error.
Ricco pitched the entire game and earned the win for Sullivan Fire, while DuPont took the loss for Hornbeck’s.
