R&H GORR OUTFIELDER Todd Houghtaling makes a terrific catch against American Electric during the recent Fremont Softball Tournament. Houghtaling’s teammates Kurt Buddenhagen, left, and John Glassel, right, also attempted to catch the fly ball.

Matthew's wins in Fremont Center

FREMONT CENTER — The ninth annual Fremont Softball Tournament was held August 1, 2, 3 at Fremont’s Bjorklund Field.
The weekend was full of upsets and surprises as the 14 teams competed to take home the coveted championship trophy and bragging rights for a year.
For Fitness Factory/D-Tech, who was the two- time defending champs, the third time was not a charm.
Fitness Factory/D-Tech had the crowd on the edge of their seats as they went run for run with Matthew's on Main during the loser’s bracket final.
The men from Matthew’s squeaked out an 8-7 victory in the Sunday morning game and moved onto the finals of the double-elimination tournament, where they faced Ronny's Ringers.
Matthew’s started off strong in the championship match-up and beat Ronny's Ringers, 19-9.
Since Matthew's came out of the loser’s bracket and it was the first loss of the tournament for Ronny’s Ringers, the final game would decide the championship.
In the “if” game, Matthew's was victorious over Ronny's Ringers for a second time by the final score of 21-12.
With the victory, Matthew’s claimed the first place trophy. Ronny’s Ringers took home the second place trophy, Fitness Factory/D-Tech finished third and R&H Gorr placed fourth.
