SULLIVAN COUNTY After two weeks of intense preseason practices, fall sports teams at all of the local high schools are ready for action.
The 2008 scholastic soccer season begins this afternoon in Grahamsville as Eldred, Ellenville, Monticello and Tri-Valley play in the annual Tri-Valley Girls’ Soccer Tournament. The first match is set to begin at 2 p.m., with the second match slated for 4:30 p.m.
The two winners will meet in the championship match, scheduled to be played at 4:15 p.m. Saturday. The two losing teams will play in the consolation match at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The Fallsburg boys’ and Family School girls’ soccer teams will also begin the 2008 season in non-league matches this afternoon. The Comets travel to Chester for a 4:30 p.m. contest, while the Lady Falcons host Downsville at 4:15 p.m.
The county’s three varsity girls’ tennis teams will also begin their respective seasons today. At 4 p.m., Fallsburg hosts Port Jervis and Monticello hosts Middletown in non-league matches. Liberty will travel to Monroe-Woodbury for a 4 p.m. non-league match.
One of the key contests on tomorrow’s schedule is an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) volleyball match at Fallsburg Central School between the Monticello Lady Panthers and the Fallsburg Lady Comets.
All five of Sullivan County’s varsity football teams will open their 2008 campaigns in a few days.
At 7 p.m. Friday, the Sullivan West Bulldogs host Ellenville in a Section IX Class C game at the SW High School in Lake Huntington.
The other four county gridiron teams Eldred, Liberty, Livingston Manor/Roscoe and Tri-Valley play their first games on Saturday afternoon.
All four local teams will face teams from Section IV in non-league contests. Eldred hosts Hancock, Liberty welcomes Delhi, Livingston Manor/Roscoe travels to Harpursville and Tri-Valley plays at Walton, which is the defending New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Class D champion.
