Twins Camryn (73) and Sydney Johnson, 12, of Rock Hill ran together for most of the 5K race and crossed the finish line at the same time. But thanks to the running chips (visible on their ankles) Camryn stopped the clock half a second faster than her sister as they finished 2-3 overall in the female division.

Run-a-thon is a ‘monstrous’ collective effort

By Frank Rizzo
MONTICELLO — The logistics behind putting on a race as large as the Monster Run-a-Thon can give any race director anxious moments.
Fortunately for Orshii Boldiis, who has directed the Monticello Rotary-sponsored race for the past 11 years, there is always a large contingent of volunteers ready to help.
“It’s quite an undertaking,” said Boldiis, of Hankins, about the race. “But everything went perfectly this year. I had a great time.”
Preparations began months ago, and though sponsorships, in this economic climate, were harder than usual to come by, the businesses and individuals came through in the end.
Aside from Rotary members, Boldiis can count on the Sullivan Striders running club, the Delaware Valley Job Corps students, as well as people from the organizations receiving the proceeds from the races – Action Toward Independence and Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County.
In addition, there were Monticello PD officers helping to direct traffic and personnel from Rock Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Mobilemedic and the Monticello Fire Department.
As usual, the Rotary’s Les Kristt served as emcee, and Rotarian Helen Diehl of Callicoon handed out the trophies.
Timing and results were provided by FastFinishes of Pennsylvania. For the first time, runners were fashioned with running chips, worn around the ankles, that stopped the clock when they stepped on the finish line mats.
“It’s a challenging course,” said Mark Hughes of FastFinishes, a road runner since the 1980s. “It’s not your garden variety 5K or 10K. It’s got hills you don’t see in too many local races, and runners know they’ll be challenged.”
