HANCOCK — February 1, 2011 — Following a virtually even first quarter, the visiting Eldred Lady Yellowjackets took the lead early in the second period on their way to a 50-35 victory over the Hancock Lady Wildcats on Thursday evening in a non-league basketball game.
An offensive rebound by Kim Elvin and a basket inside the lane by Sage Owens gave Eldred a quick 4-0 lead just over a minute into the game.
With 2:42 remaining in the first period, Meaghan Hazen scored a basket to give the Lady Yellowjackets another four-point advantage at 13-9.
After Eldred (6-5) missed some opportunities at the free-throw line, Hancock’s Lindsay McGraw swished a 3-point shot to bring her team within a point at 13-12 with 1:16 left in the quarter.
Early in the second period, the Lady Wildcats again dialed long distance as Sayla Kane hit a 3-point shot to even the score at 15-15.
But Elvin responded with a steal and a layup just 38 seconds after Kane’s 3-pointer to give the Lady Yellowjackets a 17-15 lead. It turned out to be a lead that the Lady Yellowjackets would not relinquish.
After taking a 24-18 advantage into halftime, Eldred outscored Hancock by 14-10 and 12-7 margins in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
Hazen swished a jump shot with 6:47 remaining in the third period to give the Lady Yellowjackets their first double-digit lead of the game at 28-18.
Hazen finished with a double-double of a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds. Owens almost had a double-double as she netted 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Elvin and Sam Ferguson added eight points apiece for the Lady Yellowjackets, while Elvin also made seven steals.
“I thought we played well on defense,” Eldred Coach Jolene Porter said.
She was also pleased to pick up a non-league victory on the road.
“It was a group effort tonight,” Porter said.
Of the Lady Yellowjackets’ seven remaining regular season games, six are against fellow Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) Division V teams Chester, Fallsburg, S.S. Seward and Tri-Valley.
Hancock, a Section IV, Class D team, is now 4-9 on the season.
Kortnie Figura led Hancock with 12 points and Kane finished with 10 points.
McGraw added six points, while Ashley Banicky had four points, 13 rebounds and seven steals for the Lady Wildcats.
“We knew we had to defend Sage Owens well because she’s such a good player down inside,” Hancock Coach Jeremiah Johnson said. “They have a very good team.”
As for his team, Johnson noted that the Lady Wildcats were unable to capitalize on some opportunities.
“We had some good shots, but just couldn’t make them,” he said.
While the Lady Wildcats made 47 percent of their shots beyond the 19-foot, 9-inch arc, they only converted 6-of-24 regular field goals..
