FALLSBURG — January 28, 2011 — The second quarter proved to be pivotal when the Eldred Yellowjackets visited the Fallsburg Comets on Monday night for an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) Division V basketball game.
Fallsburg used those eight minutes to extend what had been a six-point advantage into a 36-22 lead at halftime.
After a relatively even third period, the Yellowjackets outscored the Comets in the fourth quarter, 24-19.
But it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit as Fallsburg posted a 66-54 victory.
After Eldred’s Nick Mehedin made a jump shot midway through the second period to bring his team to within seven at 23-16, Fallsburg (5-5, 4-1 Div. V) responded with a 8-0 run to push its lead into double figures at 32-16. Michael Robinson started the run by a making a shot in the key, which was followed just 20 seconds later with a basket by Rakkir Watson off a steal.
Following a Yellowjackets’ timeout Danny Justiniano made a jump shot.
Braiden DeGraw swished a 3-pointer with 2:20 to go to complete the scoring run.
Eldred (4-6, 1-3 Div. V) answered with a 6-0 run of its own to close the Comets’ lead to 32-22. Mike Puzio scored a basket, Mehedin hit a 3-pointer and Chris Pitcher made a free throw.
But the Yellowjackets’ struggled with free throws throughout the game, as they only made 12 of 24 shots at the line.
Fallsburg made 7 of 11 foul shots.
“If you look at the scoreboard, that’s the difference in the game,” Eldred Coach J.J. Gass said. “Fallsburg shot the ball very well. We got the lead down to nine at one point, but then they went back up by about 15 points.
“But we played very well in the fourth quarter,” he added.
Mehedin and P.J. Collins each scored 15 points to lead the Yellowjackets, while Pitcher netted 14 points.
Robinson paced Fallsburg with a game-high 20 points. Watson and DeGraw also reached double figures with 18 points and 10 points, respectively.
Justiniano and Jimmy Bertholf each added eight points for the Comets.
Fallsburg Coach Pete Dworetsky was pleased to see his team get back on the winning track following a tough division loss at S.S. Seward last Saturday afternoon.
“We got home at 9 Saturday night and were practicing at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday,” he said. “I thought we played good basketball tonight. It was a great game.
“I’m proud of my guys,” Dworetsky added. “We are going to keep working toward our goal of making sectionals.”
