Sonny’s almost defeats Cooper Paint with a rally in the seventh inning

By Laura Stabbert
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Sonny’s Service Center recorded five runs in a two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning against Cooper Paint on Thursday night, but it was not enough for victory.
Cooper Paint advanced its overall record to 8-2 in the Sullivan County Women’s Softball League with a 13-11 win over Sonny’s in the “A” Division game played at the White Sulphur Springs Firemen’s Field.
Lori Brown had an inside-the-park home run to give Cooper Paint a 2-1 lead after the first frame.
Pat Shuart pitched the whole game for Cooper Paint and she and her team kept Sonny’s scoreless for the next two innings.
In the bottom of the third inning, Brown had an RBI triple to give Cooper Paint a 4-1 advantage. But unfortunately on the next play she fell while crossing home plate and was unable to play for the remainder of the game.
In the top of the fifth, Sonny’s recorded three runs to make the score 13-5.
Kathy Jo Hoyt pitched the whole game for Sonny’s and she kept Cooper Paint from rounding the bags in the fifth and sixth innings.
Justine Whitcomb was the leadoff batter for Sonny’s in the top of the seventh inning when the team was trailing by eight runs.
“Listen, it’s 0-0!” said Whitcomb when somebody asked the score.
Whitcomb hit a single and Janet Calangelo and Kerri Frasier both got hits to load the bases.
Whitcomb tagged up and scored off Stephanie Lynch’s fly ball. The next batter got out, but Sonny’s (5-5) added another five runs before the sun went down and the game ended with Cooper Paint holding on for a two-run victory.
