Local teams, athletes excel at the Monticello Games

MONTICELLO — Hundreds of athletes from several area schools made their way to Ed Kennedy Field at Monticello High School on Saturday for the annual Monticello Games Track and Field Invitational meet.
On one of the nicest days so far this spring, the scholastic athletes gave it their best as coaches, teammates and fans shouted positive words of encouragement. In a show of good sportsmanship, several athletes from opposing schools could be seen and heard congratulating each other after finishing one of the many running events.
The Arlington boys’ and girls’ teams won the meet. In the boys’ team standings, Arlington scored 163 points to finish first. Ellenville was second (106), Byram Hills placed third (95), Middletown was fourth (87) and Eldred placed fifth (43).
In the girls’ team standings, Arlington scored 142 points to place first. Middletown was second (108), Eldred placed third (67), Tri-Valley was fourth (63) and Red Hook placed fifth (60).
Several athletes from Sullivan County high schools won their respective events.
The boys who won events included: Matt Rodriguez of Monticello, who won the boys’ 400 dash in a time of 52.8 seconds, Brandon Corley of Monticello, who took first place in the shot put (43 feet, 6 1/2 inches), Todd Roeder of Sullivan West, who placed first in the discus (125 feet, 6 inches), Hunter Proscia of Eldred, who won the 3,000 steeplechase in 10:35.5 and Peter Koval of Liberty, who took first place in the javelin (130-7).
In addition, the Monticello team of Tino Taylor, Matt Rodriguez, Austin Colon and Dom Martinez won the varsity 1600 relay in a time of 3.38.0.
And the Eldred team of Alex Campanella, Adrian Krzysztofowicz, Julian Gottlieb and Julian Deleon prevailed in the freshman/sophomore sprint medley relay in 3:59.1.
The girls who won events included: Diana Schombs of Eldred, who took first place in the pole vault (9-0), Hannah Feinman of Sullivan West, who placed first in the long jump (15-3 1/4) and Erika Bowring of Eldred, who won the triple jump (32-2 1/2).
The winners of each event, along with athletes from Sullivan County high schools who placed in the top six, were as follows:
