CALLICOON The 2011 Sullivan County Democrat Big Buck Contest is underway.
Despite warm weather for the opening two days and rain on Wednesday, several hunters have entered their bucks in the 38th annual contest.
As of noon on Wednesday, the leader in the contest is a monster buck taken in the Town of Mamakating. Lou Sabatello, who is a member of the Wood Trail Hunting Club in Wurtsboro, shot the buck in Wurtsboro this past Saturday, which was opening day of the regular firearm deer hunting season here in Sullivan County.
Sabatello then took the 8-point buck to Rod’s Taxidermy in Callicoon, which is one of the official measuring stations for the contest. The buck totaled 76 in the Democrat measuring system.
The contest is open to any hunter who legally takes a buck during the regular firearm season here in Sullivan County or in Wayne County, Pa. The season here in Sullivan County runs through Sunday, Dec. 11. The season in Wayne County begins on Monday, Nov. 28 and concludes on Saturday, Dec. 10.
