JEFFERSONVILLE Monticello’s Camryn Johnson and Eldred’s Hunter Proscia outdistanced a large pack of runners Tuesday afternoon as cross country teams from all local high schools competed in an Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association (OCIAA) meet at Sullivan West’s Jeffersonville campus.
The full roster of teams at a league meet met with mixed reviews from participating coaches.
“I think the dual meet season is very redundant,” Monticello Coach Pete Wysochanski said. “It doesn’t seem to matter as much as it could. I don’t think it does a lot [for our team].”
“I think it’s great to have all the teams at a meet like this,” SW Boys’ Coach Kim Weyant said. “The top Tri-Valley boys aren’t here today. But it’s good to see what competition is out there.”
In fact, this was the second consecutive OCIAA meet that Tri-Valley didn’t send their top runners in preparation for an invitational this time in advance of tomorrow’s Burnt Hills Invitational.
JOHNSON LEADS GIRLS
The girls took to the 3-mile course first. The course started near the soccer field, went through the woods, continued near the school building and ended next to the soccer field.
Monticello’s Camryn Johnson and Sydney Johnson, who are 12-year-old twins in the eighth grade, finished first and second, respectively. Camryn Johnson crossed the finish line with a time of 20 minutes, 13 seconds and Sydney Johnson finished in 20:14.
Christine Donnelly of Eldred was third in 20:27.
“We had some great runners right behind us,” Camryn Johnson said. “They kept up and really pushed us.”
Those runners were Donnelly and SW’s Kelsey Dutton, who placed fourth in 20:42.
“The course has some good hills,” Camryn Johnson said. “There is a hill in the woods. It’s a good course.”
PROSCIA PACES BOYS
In the boys’ race, Eldred’s Hunter Proscia prevailed in a time of 16:38. Teammate Alex Campanella was second in 17:09, while SW’s Reed Scott took third in 17:19.
“The course is a good challenge,” Proscia commented. “There are a lot of hills. But there are some flat areas, so it’s not so bad.”
Proscia and Campanella were out in front for virtually the entire race.
“I just wanted to go out at a nice pace,” Proscia said. “Alex is getting over being sick, so he is still returning to his full ability. Otherwise, he would have been closer to me.”
In the boys’ team results, SW defeated T-V 27-31, Eldred 15-50, Monticello 15-50 and Livingston Manor 21-28. Liberty defeated Eldred 15-50, Manor 22-37, Monticello 15-50, SW 23-37 and Tri-Valley 23-32. Manor defeated T-V 27-29.
In the girls’ team results, Eldred defeated Liberty 15-50 and T-V 15-50. Monticello defeated Eldred 21-35, SW 23-32 and Tri-Valley 15-50. SW defeated Eldred 23-33, Liberty 15-50 and T-V 15-50.
