SW recognizes Hilton, Potter at Spring Awards

Story by Jon Dinan
LAKE HUNTINGTON — Sullivan West recognized athletes from seven sports Wednesday evening at its annual Spring Sports Awards Presentation and two dedicated community members who will be missed. Before an audience of about 300 attendees, SW’s athletic director, David Franskevicz paid homage to retiring superintendent, Kenneth Hilton and the late Democrat sports editor Rob Potter.
“I would like to thank Dr. Hilton for his continued support which was always seen whether it was a rainy Friday night or a capacity-filled gym.” Franskevicz said.
About Potter, Franskevicz said: “He showed us each what the meaning of strength and courage really is. It didn’t matter if they were playing in their own back yard near Lake Huntington or Jeffersonville or playing out of town in Orange County or the Mid- Hudson Region. Rob was there for us.”
Franskevicz then asked the bulldog faithful to bow their heads in a moment of silence.
As for the athletes, E.J. Franskevicz and Kristina Sumfleth were the night’s big winners. Both shared scholar-athlete, and most valuable senior athlete of the year honors. In addition, Franskevicz was name the baseball team’s MVP and Sumfleth was named the girls’ Most Valuable Field athlete.
Sumfleth also won the Billy Moran Scholarship awarded to one senior athlete in recognition of their outstanding acheivements.
“It’s really amazing. I wasn’t expecting it at all.” Sumfleth admitted. The 18-year-old will be attending Villanova University outside Philadelphia this fall.
