Eldred uses share tactics in win over Chapel Field

Story by Jon Dinan
ELDRED – January 15 — The Eldred girls’ basketball team let Chapel Field nibble away at a 20-point lead but ultimately held on for a 35-22 victory at Eldred on Friday night.
With the victory The Lady Yellowjackets (3-5, 2-0 OCIAA Division VI) remained in first place, tied with Livingston Manor.
Eldred showed their ability to share the ball as they increased a 4-0 first quarter lead to a 16-5 halftime lead.
“I thought we came out really slow to start the game but we got into our stride in the second quarter,” said Eldred head coach Teresa Colvin.
Eldred went up by 20 with two minutes left to play in the third before Chapel Field started to cut into the lead. The Lions outscored the Yellowjackets 9-2 in the final quarter, but it was too little too late.
Eldred had six players score in an evenly dispersed attack against a noticeably taller Chapel Field team.
Abigail Ellert, Jessica Schips, and Erin Angus all scored six points while Samantha Banghart, Nicole Elvin and Rebecca Morgan each had four.
“We distributed really well and got everyone involved tonight which is nice to see from my team,” said Colvin. “I don’t think we had a top scorer tonight,” Colvin remarked.
“I think we did better today as a team than we have all season,” said Yellowjackets guard Stephanie Lee.
Sami Gerone had eight points to lead all scorers for Chapel Field.
The Yellowjackets will host Tri-Valley in a non-league game tonight at 6:30 p.m.
