Eldred is all Bisland against Fallsburg
Story by Eli Ruiz
SOUTH FALLSBURG May 17, 2013 Eldred scored early and often Tuesday in an 11-8 non- league win over a pesky Fallsburg squad Tuesday.
In the first inning, Emily Bisland put Eldred on the board with one of her three RBIs, scoring Abbie Ellert on a single up the middle. Bisland later scored on a hard liner to right from Sam Banghart giving the Yellowjackets an early 2-0 lead.
"We came ready to play from the start," said Eldred coach Teresa Colvin. "We had a really tough day yesterday [a 14-6 loss at S.S. Seward] but my girls came to play today."
Christine Christopher gave the Comets a lift in the third with a deep blast to left field for a triple, scoring Julissa Trujillo. Later in the inning, Eldred pitcher Jordan Lepes walked Kierra Miller to load the bases for the Comets with no outs. Lepes then snagged a hard grounder from Samantha Wiles and nailed Christopher at the plate for the first out. After forcing an infield pop up from Jeweliana Trujillo, Lepes stuck out Sarah Hallenbeck getting herself and the Yellowjackets out of a tight spot.
Bisland, Lynzee Kelty and Mikaela Balsano helped Eldred add two more runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.
But Fallsburg would rally in the fifth. Wiles dropped in a high fly ball to right-center, scoring Kierra Miller. Two batters later Hallenbeck lifted a double to right-field scoring Jeweliana Trujillo and Miller to bring the Comets within a run, 5-4. The next batter, Cristal Cannon, tied the score with a single to shallow left.
Eldred (5-8) responded with six runs in the seventh, and though Fallsburg (3-12) answered with four runs in their half of the final frame, the Comets came up a little short.
"Today was tough," said Fallsburg coach Carlye Hyde. "We hung in there but we just couldn't get that one big play. These girls are great though. They don't get down on themselves, they don't give up and they always do what's asked of them. They give 110 percent out there and that's all I can ask."
Said Colvin of her team’s offense: "We hit the ball today for sure, offered Colvin. "Sometimes, like in the fifth inning, the girl's heads get out of the game, but they hung in there and had a big seventh to put it away. I can't be anything but proud of my girls.
Bisland went four-for-five and Balsano added three RBIs for Eldred. Julissa Trujillo went three-for-three and Cristal Cannon had two hits and an RBI for Fallsburg.
