Cohen finishes strong in NYS Mid-Am

Staff Report
FAYETTEVILLE — October 1, 2013 — Ken Cohen of Jeffersonville fired a final round 72 to finish 13th in the New York State Mid-Amateur Golf Championship played Friday through Sunday at Onondaga Country Club.
Cohen, 50, shot 74 and 81 to make the cut on the number and entered the final round tied for 28th. But his one-over par 72 on a windy Sunday – the best score of the day – jumped him 15 spots to finish 13th and earn him an exemption into next year’s tournament. The top 15 finishers are awarded exemptions from qualifying.
“I feel good about finishing strong and getting the exemption,” said Cohen. “I was really hoping to contend this week and was right in it after the first round. But I took 38 putts in the second round and that took me out of it.”
Onondaga’s fast and treacherous greens played havoc with the field as players had trouble keeping some putts on the greens. Four-putts were not uncommon and Jim Scorse’s winning score of 4-over par was considered high for a course that measured just over 6,500 yards.
“They were definitely the fastest greens I’ve putted on all year and possibly ever,” said Cohen. “You were actually better off being 10 yards short of the green than on the green 25 feet above the hole. There was just no way to stop the ball.”
