Monticello’s Yami Reyes goes up for a block during Wed-nesday’s loss to Port Jervis. It was the last home game for four Monticello seniors.

Port spoils Monti senior night

Story by Kayla Greco
MONTICELLO — October 18, 2013 — The Monticello girls’ varsity volleyball team said farewell to four seniors who played their final home match on Wednesday.
Port Jervis (8-7, 2-4 league) defeated the Lady Panthers in four sets in a must-win situation for the Raiders who needed victories over Monticello and two of its last three games to qualify for sectionals.
Monticello (10-8, 1-7 league) has already clinched a sectional berth by virtue of a guaranteed .500 overall record.
After a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Goshen last week, Port came out ready to play and seemed to sense the urgency of the moment.
Senior captain and libero, Brittney Phil, has been on the Port Jervis Varsity for three years.
“I knew we needed it, said Port’s senior captain Brittney Phil, who has been recruited to play college volleyball next year at St. Lawrence University. “I was pumped for a win, I was eager to push everybody and I’m glad we got it.”
Monticello head coach Karen Atack said she was disappointed in her team for not playing to their full potential.
“Tonight they were the better team and I hope we meet them again in sectionals,” said Atack.
